The Firefox browser continues to be a beacon for many Internet users.
More than 2.6 million people visited the Firefox Web site in March to obtain more information about the open-source software and perhaps download it, according to Nielsen/NetRatings. That's up from 2.2 million in January and 1.6 million in February.
Firefox has come on like gangbusters since last year, and now holds approximately 5 percent of the browser market. That's a small share, but the arrival of the browser--which has garnered attention in part as an alternative to Microsoft's Internet Explorer--has coincided with IE's dominant market share dipping below 90 percent.
"Firefox gives Web surfers a simple tool that blocks unsolicited windows, is less susceptible to virus attacks, and offers a unique means of navigating multiple sites within a single browser," Ken Cassar, director of strategic analytics at Nielsen/NetRatings, said in a statement.

FireFox is the way to go, especially when posting to FR.
I have been using FireFox for one week now - I like it.
I got a new HP laptop last week running Windows XP. After cruising around for a day on IE, I got around to downloading FF and Zone Alarm. I then ran both AdAware and Spybot which found 5+ spybot/adbots between them. IE sucks so bad - it's a joke.
bump
I switch between firefox and Safari on my home computer (PowerMacintosh - Mac OSX machine). I have found pages that one or the other doesn't work well with.
At work (a public school) I have installed Firefox on all the machines I use - and have seen a major downturn in the quantity of spyware and malware.
IE use to be the most "compatible" as far as rendering poorly assembled pages. No longer. It's just a window for viruses and other trash to bog down your computer - not to mention that it is still rather unstable.
Using it now and have been using it for months.
IE is toast.
i got a hp recently too. good value for money but OH SO MUCH HP software. Not sure yet if I want to unintall it all. It's more like clutterware than anything to me. But a nice PC (so far) otherwise. Of course first app I installed was FireFox!! Occassionally I have to ue IE, but I think that it's too big a target to be secure!
I also recently got an HP laptop and I love it. I agree about the software, but it still runs so much faster than the Gateway PC I had. I will never buy another Gateway.
I just got my first Dell laptop at home. My iMac died after 6 years. I too am running firefox.
