Eric Rudolph Pleads Guilty to Ala. Bombing

AP) - Eric Rudolph pleaded guilty Wednesday to a 1998 abortion clinic bombing that killed a police officer, the first in a string of bombings that he has admitted to as part of a plea deal. Rudolph arrived at the federal court in Birmingham in a car surrounded by 10 marked and unmarked police vehicles. He was expected to plead guilty to three other bombings later Wednesday, including the blast at the Atlanta Olympics in 1996. Outside the courthouse before Rudolph arrived, Emily Lyons, who was critically injured in the Birmingham bombing, said she was "nauseated" that Rudolph's plea will allow him to dodge the death penalty. I heard NPR discussing this story this morning. In a shocking role reversal, you could hear that they were shocked that he was not getting the death penalty. Apparently, the death penalty is OK for anti-abortion nuts and white supremacists, but bad for all other categories of murderers.

Emily Lyons is in that class of people who think no one should escape the abortionists suction machine.

This woman also said she wanted to know "why Rudolph could be so cruel".

Considering where she works I'd think she knows.

Why did Rudolph do it?

Patricia Rudolph [Eric's mother] was a former nun who not only left the Catholic Church, but went on what Deborah has called "the search for the true church." She eventually embraced a version of Christian Identity, which is a theological version of white supremacy.

Eric Rudolph was exposed to this, first in North Carolina when his mother moved the family there, then when she took him and his brothers to a Christian Identity compound in Missouri. By ninth grade, he had written a term paper claiming the Holocaust never happened.

Eric's brother Daniel amputated his hand and videotaped it in protest of the FBI and media attention on his brother.

That was back in 1998, shortly after the longer than five-year manhunt for Eric Rudolph began. Daniel Rudolph's hand was surgically reattached. Later, after divorcing his wife, he moved back in with his mother.

For the FBI Eric Rudolph has been the ideal guy to hunt for ~ almost middle-aged, but certainly a disgruntled white male.

I don't think he had access to a high tech biochem laboratory, but there's a lot we don't know about this guy.

Sometimes I'm surprised the FBI bothered to bring him in ~ after all, every day he was on the loose he proved the legitimacy of their "one size fits all" profile for every sort of criminal and terrorist.
