Follow the money. They are willing to let the Israelis come pray at the synagogue because they hope Israelis will come to the casino as well. I suspect they will draw a line at letting Israelis march around Jericho blowing trumpets.

The Byzantine period ended with the Arab conquest in the 630s. I'm not sure what they consider the beginning of the Byzantine period, since the so-called Byzantine Empire is just the continuation of the Roman Empire...perhaps the 4th century would be the dividing line.
