Besides being ClintonBeGone's patron saint, next week will mark the 169 anniversary of General D. Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna, having his army destroyed and his ass handed to him by a rag-tag group of American volunteer patriots

And a few years later he got it handed to him again, resulting in the acquisition of California, New Mexico and Arizona, plus settlement of the question of the southern border of what was by then the State of Texas. My Mexican exchange student "daughter" was taught that Santa Ana was a traitor, but in reality he was just a military dictator, who was good at raising and equipping an Army but lousy at leading it in battle.

I have lost track of the miles and the numbers. Perhaps you could remind me. If the Minutemen volunteers were replaced with military or national guard types how many would be required?

Not many would be needed. What Minuteman Project proved was that the border intruders will not cross in an area where they fear to cross. The border intruders do not fear being picked up by Border Patrol because all BP does is render first aid, give them a sandwich, and bus them back to the border to try again the same day or the next. It's just a game. Add in the evil, gun-toting vigilantes and suddenly they're afraid to cross and either staying home or finding a way around them.

We need troops down here for a number of reasons. For one, as mentioned above, the border intruders need to fear coming across illegally. Nothing like a bunch of armed soldiers to put the fear into them. Second, we need to relieve an overburdened Border Patrol Agent force by providing proper military support in engineering barricades, setting up and monitoring surveillance equipment, processing and transporting illegal aliens, etc. An image must also be cultivated among those who would potentially cross that the U.S. military is now on the border and that they mean business.

Also, check you maps - we're all Americans (US, Mexico, Canadians).

Are we all Norte Americanos as well?

Seems to me I remember reading about Santa Anna escaping one of his defeats, dressed as a woman.

Praise for a man who was an avowed enemy of the United States

There was a period, during the early stage of the Mexican War, when the US returned Santa Ana to Mexico from exile. Those responsible thought they could deal with him, but as soon as he got a bit of power in Mexico (rallying his old allies) he turned on his benefactors, in hopes of getting even more power. Instead he lost a good chunk of the country... although we did *pay* for it as well.

>"It would have been better, for both the United States and for Mexico, if Sam Houston had had him [Santa Anna] hung."<

Yes, especially after Santa Anna showed no mercy to the 300 American men (POW's) that he executed in Goliad, Texas.
Regardless of that brutal act, Santa Anna is ClintonBeGones defacto HERO:

They might try to give that impression after they arrive here illegally, but the fact is they already a name.

The folks I was referring to are middle to upper class Mexican nationals, with no intent of ever entering the US illegally. They do come here frequently on business though, and one couple and their children currently live legally in the US, managing the US end of the family business. The kids are actually American citizens, having been born here some years before when their grandfather was running the US end of things. He's now back in Mexico, running one part of the business there.

They do of course generally call themselves Mexicans, but on occasion they say they are Americans as well.

I wouldn't get too hung up on the terminology anyway. They know the difference between USA citizens and EUM Citizens. (Official name of Mexico is Estados Unidos Mexicanos (United Mexican States).

I thought I remembered that as well, but when I tried to look it up to verify, I found a transcription of the report of James Sylvester, who captured Santa Ana, which stated that Antonio Lopez de Santa Ana was wearing a Mexican blanket and a "blouse" (military shirt) much too fine for him to be the common soldier he claimed to be. SA then tried to convince Sylvester that he was an aide to the General, but that didn't hold up either. Captain Sylvester lived in Texas for some time, but later moved to New Orleans. In the 1930s his body was moved to the Texas State Cemetery in Austin. One of these days I'll go down there and pay my respects. 'Course I've been saying that every since I learned the name of the man who captured Santa Ana and that he was buried there.

I did read another account, based on tales of the "Yellow Rose of Texas", that Santa Ana was captured wearing his silk PJs. But I tend to belive the written words of Captain Sylvester, who was after all, there at the time. :)

Exactly. A porous border creates an image of weakness. Electing a Kerry or a Hillary would also project such weakness (through accommodation and appeasement).

V. Fox must not be much of a chess player. Given the attention to the border issue lately, he'd be better off stepping in and controling the problem from his end, rather than allowing continuous criticism of his trading partner to the north by those loyal to the conservative side. Hence, why the liberals love the 'invasion'.

it was comedic in intent.

I lived amongst spanish and portugese speakers mostly from 80-96.

I can read espanol better but "hear" portugese better....thanks to mi ex-esposa.

When I was fluent it was sort of a Portanol-glish admittedly.

Pero, you are correcto.

It should be in that context....un grupo (a group).

El grupo would be (the group).

Tu eres un (el)gato.

Eu soy un gaton! en mis sonhos.

LOL

The irony inherent in the fact that I used to be so danged multicultural in all things latino ...South American in particular....and am now such an immigration hawk does not escape me.

There was a time I figured somewhere in SouthernbBrasil or High Guatemala or maybe Caracas would be home for me forever as an expat. My daughters did not speak Ingles well till kindergarten...that was rude to my folks and I was too blind to see it then....hormones and all.

Anyhow...now I'm a southern provincial chauvanist...back to my roots naturally.

I can think of a few posters here including El Jefe ...who wished I'd stayed in South America...lol

I'm glad I'm here...the medical care I've needed past 14 months I'd be a dead man if I'd stayed in the 3rd world.

My wife was informed tonight and she agrees that we no longer tithe to the Catholic Church. We will redirect our funds to another charity until such time as the Catholic church discontinues it's practice of supporting those who refuse to obey our laws. Christ did not advocate the disregard of laws. When and if the church starts feeling the pinch they will quit supporting the illegal aliens. They are illegal!!! Those who died next to Christ violated Roman law.

I just thought I'd let y'all know that Steve, the reporter with KFYI, has updated his MM blog through day 9 and has added some photos and audio clips (including a radio jamming signal).
