Here, here! I couldn't agree more. With a NASA that appears to be afraid of its own shadow and a population that can't seem to stomach the loss of thirteen brave souls in two shuttle accidents, we've essentially, in the grand scheme of things, accomplished almost nothing in the last 30 years--unless you consider going round and round the blue marble a great accomplishment.
Had a similar frightened mindset existed in the 16th and 17th centuries, the world's great explorers would have sat cowering and paralysed in Portugal, Spain, Italy and England wringing their hands and whining at the fate of their poor collegues who never returned home.
For god's sake be bold, NASA or if not get outa the way and let private industry get on with it. It's time to quit the endless jibber-jabber and flinging robots into space and actually accomplish something that inspires people.
The sci-fi movies may become reality. Our descendents may find a way to travel measured in light-years, "where no man has gone before". Reminds me of an old saw, "those who say it can't be done should get the hell out of the way while someone else is doing it". :)-
