Germans can whine till their cows come home.

They started the war and they killed MILLIONS!!! I WROTE MILLIONS OF INNOCENT PEOPLE IN THEIR DEATH CAMPS...PLUS THEY KILLED HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS OF CIVILIANS IN LONDON, COVENTRY AND ALL THROUGHOUT EUROPE WITH THEIR AIR FORCE.

Germany was a major aggressor and villian of a nation, filled with people who thought they were "superior beings". People who followed Hitler into hell... no doubt.

They did not even get half of what they did to others. Somebody had to put them so low to the ground that they would have to struggle just to get to curb level. Dresden was the picture of what Germans could expect for all of Germany if they did not quit fighting. Dresden showed Germans that they were NOT superior anybody.

I am old enough to remember WWII and all the grieving American families who lost menfolk who were killed fighting Germans and their pal, Japan. I remember my neighbor, a really kind guy. He was murdered by Germans at a prisoner of War camp. I still remember my father's friend who was mowed down on the beach at Normandy. I still remember the wails ands cries of their wives and mothers.

I will never forget Germany and its evil ways.

I HAVE ZERO SYMPATHY FOR THEM OR THEIR MURDEROUS NAZI POPULACE.

After Ike saw the death camps he asked... Are you still having trouble hating the nazis?

I often think they deserved at least ONE atomic bomb. They got a firebombed Dresden... they really deserved a whole lot WORSE!

Wow! Or should I say WOW! You're a tough little monkey 60 years after the war ended, aren't you?

Have you ever heard of that old addage, "be careful, lest you become that which you hate?"

If not, I most strenuously urge you to consider it.

What you are saying on this thread is indefensibly evil.

Inasmuch as the atom bomb was developed and used AFTER Germany surrendered, you'd probably hurt quite a few American occupation troops if you'd tried dropping nukes.

Never did more that 1/3 of Germans vote for the Nazis in an election that wasn't completely rigged. While it is inexcusable that the German people did not try more actively to stop what was happening, the facts do not back up the idea that the Germans were some sort of innately evil people.

Up until the point before the 1930's, Germany was considered one of the least antisemitic countries in Europe. They were one of the first to emancipate the Jews and give them full political rights, and antisemitic parties routinely lost heavily at the polls. When the Conservative party adopted an antisemitic plank to its platform, its vote total went down significantly. Parties that existed solely as antisemitic parties combined got no more than a few percent of the vote. Even for the 1/3 of the people that did vote for the Nazis in the post WWI, antisemitism played not much of a factor in most people's votes. Most people were voting on the Nazis' economic promises, and antisemitism was played down by Hitler because he was afraid of what the Germans' reactions would be.

It is unacceptable what the Nazi regime did and what the German people allowed them to do in WWII. Abosolutely reprehensable. But it is equally reprehensable to wish that we used a nuclear weapon on the country for no reason at all other than revenge. Killing people for the sake of killing them is absolutely disgusting and no better than what the Nazis did. As for Dresden, the military significance of the bombing is dubious at best. There were little if no military targets of value, but there were thousands upon thousands of civilian refugees. Yes, the Nazis killed millions, but does that mean that we should in turn kill civilians as well? Russia killed millions of Lithuanians, Ukrainians, Germans, Poles, Georgians, Armenians and others. Does that mean that we should have nuked Moscow or St. Petersburg in 1946?

I hate the Nazis, but I dont hate the Germans. I hate communists, but I dont hate the Chinese or the Russians or the Cubans. The people of all these countries were coopted by their regimes, just as the Germans were by the Nazis. Germany had to be defeated. It had to be defeated completely. But should we have tried to exterminate the 'evil' Germans just as they exterminated the 'evil' Jews? Hell no.

I'm reminded of a book written about 100 years earlier, iirc. "Extraordinary Popular Delusions and the Madness of Crowds".

I read a post about a month ago that suggested that if the US did not join in WWI, France, England, and Germany
would have settled the ongoing war on terms other than the vindictive Treaty of Versailles, and as such, would
have avoided the conditions that led to Hiter's rise to power.

Any way, I took an "Intro to Western Religion" course in college, and the prof said that the US was about
60 years behind Germany in philosophical trends...

Thank you for post. Younger generations need reminders.

Our professors discuss these "academic" issues in a sterile environment, several generations removed from the horror of WWII. They tell us to read Kurt Vonnegut for the "real story" behind the Dresden bombing, while minimizing the ill will that the German people showed when they elected and supported Hitler.

And of course, some professors claim that the majority of Germans never voted for the Nazi Party, but they forget to mention that that's very common in parliamentary elections. The bottom line is that the Nazi Party formed a majority coalition with other elected German parliament members; therefore, the majority of Germans did elected the Nazi government that had Hitler as its prime minister.
