The conditions then weren't such as I described now. The majority of voters hadn't voted for unambiguously conservative candidates, so Sink was able to get away with pretending he had a mandate. That wouldn't be the case if the third-party candidate is a conservative.
And it especially wouldn't be the case after the Democrats have been repeatedly obstructing Bush's nominees. Republicans are going to want payback for that.
Again, all this is predicated on the assumption that that there's any meaningful difference at all between Democrats and Republicans. If there isn't, then it doesn't matter if Shrillery or Romney becomes President, and therefore voting 3rd party would still be a recommended option.
