"Why is that, does everyone either have a government jobs or live in rent controlled buildings and receive tax credits instead of paying local and property taxes? Or is the whole city unemployed?"
About 65% of the people in Detroit are on some form of government assistance. The majority of those in Detroit who are employed have some sort of government job. The number of gainfully employed workers in the private sector is in the single digits. Taxes are high, particularly property taxes, because the Detroiters that vote for them aren't property owners and never have to pay them. And the businesses that locate there get tax breaks and other incentives, too. So the beleaguered few who do own houses and have jobs pay through the nose.
What a great place to stage a Super Bowl!
Well there they go again. Where have I heard that before?? Hmm?
Let me just say one more thing, those who leave can't resist the "well things used to be great where we come from" in other words, come to Florida and change everything. Sounds like I'm a little bitter? Well yeah! It's late and thank you all. Good night.
