DeLay, Griffin Agree on Bold New Vision for Space Exploration
Congressman Tom DeLay (R-Sugar Land) yesterday met with President Bush's nominee for NASA Administrator, Dr. Michael Griffin, to discuss the direction of the agency under Griffin's leadership.
"The president gave NASA a new mission, the most challenging ever attempted by mankind," DeLay said. "With this daring comes great reward, and I am committed to continuing the fight to sell the president's vision to my colleagues in Congress. With Dr. Griffin joining that fight, we can accomplish great things for NASA."
In yesterday's meeting, DeLay and Griffin both committed to supporting one another's efforts to promote President Bush's vision. In addition to legislative strategy, the two discussed the importance of reaching out to the public on the important work NASA is doing and the need for commercialization of space.
"In order to ensure America moves forward on all fronts - technologically, economically, and militarily - we must take the president's plan and move forward. Without the new vision, our space program will falter," DeLay added. "Dr. Griffin has the background and the passion to lead NASA in the right direction, and I am excited about his nomination."
DeLay represents Texas' 22nd District, which encompasses suburban Houston and NASA's Johnson Space Center.
NASA and Tom DeLay ping.
Aim higher. We can accomplish great things through NASA. I hope Mr DeLay survives the present attacks, but he probably won't. We are allowed only one pretender to the throne at a time, and Hillary is anointed.
DELAY will survive and he will triumph. He is an upstanding man. And he is man that gets it done.
It's 41-21 and the two minute warning has sounded. Can DeLay pull out a win after all? It looks hopeless, but some still cheer him on.
I hope Delay survives too, he might be able to maintain the course for the VSE long after Bush leaves office.
It is looking bad for DeLay if he needs to stand next to NASA in hopes that some of the aura of success rubs off.
That's the thing. The whole plan could be gone like a snowflake in July in less than 4 years.
Tom Delay is the only one in this party who will speak for what is good and right!
There might be some truth to that. I don't expect much from the Republicans, although they can surprise from time to time. I expect nothing from Democrats, though, and am rarely disappointed.
Mike Griffin goes before the Senate Science Committee tomorrow, Tuesday. Go to their web site to watch the streaming media coverage.
Obviously you don't know Mike Griffin.
I don't know whether those priorities have survived; I certainly hope not, we need the Shuttle fleet to continue the work with the ISS until the relief spaceplane design shows up.
Right now I think we need to break out the blueprints for Endeavour and crank out two or three more copies to buy ourselves another 15 years before we have to fly serviceable numbers of a followon vehicle: Discovery and Atlantis will be reaching the end of their service lives in a few years and after that will be suitable only for unmanned truck flights.
Nice catch. NASA is a means to an end, not an end unto itself.
