Washington, D.C. -- House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement today on the death of Pope John Paul II:

"The world mourns the passing of one of the great spiritual and humanitarian leaders of our time, Pope John Paul II.

"Pope John Paul II was passionate in his commitment to doing God's work here on earth, seeking peace and justice for all. His deeds, his words, and his indomitable spirit of love were a blessing to this world.

"Pope John Paul II was a man of God, and he was also a man of the people. He was a source of hope to so many, and he honored that devotion by traveling the world to reach out to people of all ages, nationalities, and faiths.

"It is written in the book of Genesis, 'Thou shalt go to thy fathers in peace; thou shalt be buried in a good old age.' Pope John Paul II is with his Father now. We were blessed that he preached peace in this world for so long."

It is clear that she, along with the rest of the party, are desperate to appeal to non-secular america. Her hypocrisy is astounding. It's amazing when you think that Bush beat Kerry among Catholics. Although Kerry is about as Catholic as Hilary "Rob em" Clinton is moderate.

Did Barbara Boxer have a statement on the Pope's passing? Her voting record has got to be as hideous as Pelosi's.

That's a very thoughtful and touching statement on the passing of Pope John Paul II. I wonder who wrote it for her.

Pope John Paul II opposed almost everything that nancy pelosi believes in ... she would do better simply to STFU.

It is written in the book of Genesis...

Probably as far as she got in her quest to read all the books of the Bible.

Pelosi, Boxer, Feinstein...there's a book that needs to be written about these three called something like "The Women of the Yuk-Yuk Sisterhood."

But Boxer doesn't claim to be Catholic.

I'd like to find an honest California "journalist" who'd ask Pelosi haw many abortions she, personally, has had.

Geez, at least Pelosi didn't criticize the Pope for helping Ronald Reagan destroy her beloved communism!

In all fairness, Bush's war in Iraq was deemed immoral by the Pope. This was not a man who opposed all war, he merely oppossed this one.

That is indeed a fair criticism, except for the minor point that Bush does not claim to be a Catholic, while Pelosi does.

I have been looking for a quote of John Paul II stating this opposition. I have seen statements by other Vatican officials, but have only seen direct JPII quotes advising caution, etc. Any references?

After reading Pelosi's description of Pope John Paul II, I have to conclude that he WAS NOT A DEMOCRAT!

Also look for the quotes that came after it, where I belive it could be said that JPII 'reassessed' his views of the war given the democratic outcome.

It's not that JPII would be considered a 'war supporter' by any stretch of the imagination, but I remember thinking when I heard it, "Now that's something The Guardian isn't going to repeat more than once." Bloggodocio
