1000's of Children in Ho Chi Minh City with Bird Flu Symptoms

Hospitals in Ho Chi Minh City have been filled with thousands of children who have caught respiratory and digestive illnesses due to the hot weather.
Pediatric Hospital I reported that it had examined nearly 4,000 children patients a day with some 85 per cent of them suffering from respiratory problems, said a hospital doctor.
Meanwhile, more than 3,000 children were brought into Pediatric Hospital II on Monday. One-third of the children had respiratory problems and 300 others had digestive problems.
Besides, many children have been hospitalized for brain diseases caused by the entero virus.
The major reason behind the illnesses is that children are sleeping all night with fans on due to the hot weather in recent days.

Recombinomics Commentary: The deafening dearth of data in Vietnam may have ended.
The number of children alone would be cause for concern, but large numbers of patients with respiratory and digestive illness and "brain diseases". in
Vietnam ring alarm bells very loudly.

Serious H5N1 testing is indicated, although results from Quang Binh, Haiphong, and Quang Ninh have not been reported.

Bird flu monitoring in Vietnam is well beyond scandalous.

Thanks for the link: quite a read (not recommended for dinnertime reading). I was particularly struck by the irony in that it was the scientific triumph of smallpox "eradication" that set us up for the use of smallpox as a devastating bioweapon.

The U.S. govt. has made strides in vaccine acquisition since that article was published. From the CDC Emergency Preparedness pages:

Currently, the United States has a big enough stockpile of smallpox vaccine to vaccinate everyone in the United States in the event of a smallpox emergency.

This is not especially comforting when you take into account that a large percentage of the population is ineligible for vaccine and given also (per the New Yorker article) that near-universal levels of vaccination are not necessarily proof against extensive outbreaks.

I'll feel more secure when (if) they develop an effective treatment.

You do know, China Airlines is from Taiwan, not the Peoples Republic of China?

NAHHH!!! You run your family toothbrushes and your kitchen sponges through the dishwasher, separately of course if you are really "Monk" ee ! One hundred and forty degree water ought to do the trick! Although when small ones are sick, I do boil the teakettle and pour it over the brush! Get rid of those gross cups that everyone's saliva drips into after brushing and you'll be a happy Camper!

Did I say Paranoid?

When the plague comes, whatever it is, we need a corps of volunteers to rush around to make sure the ACLU gets it first.

I can promise you my toothbrush never sits out in a gross shared cup, or anywhere else anyone could ever have access to it.

It's put away far from any possibility of contamination by others!

Just remembering that Seinfeld episode in which one of his girlfriends dipped his toothbrush in the toilet...

Vietnam is communist in name only, there is more free market capitalism there than in many so called capitalist countries. Go there, you'd be in for a surprise.
