"Perverse and stunning... NYC will continue to exist as an incredible selfperpetuating wealth reinforcer with a parasitic socialistic blood sucking municipal workforce that feeds off of the rich. the speed of the wealth growth seems to be on an up curve as well."
Uh, have I wandered into ClassEnvy.com or MaoRocks.org?
So long as you have a chance to fulfill your economic potential, what do you care about these folks?
And without rich people, where would you get the money to purchase your goods and services, or invest into your ideas?
The last I heard, it wasn't poor people endowing Hillsdale College or your churches or paying for scholarships for poor kids.
Here, let me send you some Ayn Rand....
Little Rock, Arkansas would be the elite's playground if the New York Fed was moved there. Its a one horse town, but it is a hell of a horse, money creation.
And in addition, how many of these people are Trust Fund Babies?
That's not my point. My point is there is a bizarre relationship between the wealth of the city and the local government that is not as efficient or as successful as a fraction of the local Wall Street economy which drives everything. And yes Wall Street is a self perpetuating weath generator.
It's not a criticism that it's growing harder and harder for non wall street workers to live and/or start families here, it's just a reality. And I thinkthe city has a physical finite limit. I think a radical rezoning of the city allowing much denser development would improve the city. This would include the elimination of rent stabilization.
New York magazine loves running these 'playa hating' type stories. The truth, is noone wants to go back to the 70s when NYC was facing bankruptcy and turning into Detroit or Philadelphia.
I tend to agree. This is a delightful account of the super-rich, whom I do not resent in the slightest. I think a shoe-shine boy getting a million dollar bonus is great! If they wish to singlehandedly support 50,000 city employees, more power to them. They live there voluntarily after all, and if they want to pay those taxes, it is no concern of mine.
I do feel sorry, though, for the schleps who think they have a right to live in Manhattan on a budget, just because they want to. I too would like to live in a lot of places I can't afford.
