Mountain biker recovering after tumbling off cliff

WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - A 50-year-old mountain biker who tumbled off a cliff over the weekend said Monday that he was recovering from a broken vertebrae and "a whole lot of cuts and bruises."

Gerald Hjelle, of Martinez, was cycling in the Carquinez Scenic Park southeast of the Carquinez Bridge on Sunday afternoon when he fell 70 feet from what authorities described as a steep and twisting road. The park is near the seaside town of Crockett in the eastern San Francisco Bay area.

Contra Costa County medical workers hiked to the man and gave him first aid but were unable to carry him out. He was transported by emergency helicopter to John Muir Medical Center in Walnut Creek.

"I'm in some pain but nothing really serious," Hjelle said by telephone from his hospital bed. "I think I'm pretty lucky. I'm still a little puzzled how I did it. It's not something I'd recommend to anyone."

He said he hoped to be released from the hospital in a few days.

Darn, I thought for a minute it might be John Kerry, trying to emulate the studliness of W's recent fall, but miscalculating in that haughty way of his...

Well Gerald, welcome to the OTB club. You really entered in a big way. 70 feet, he's damn lucky to be alive.

Cheers!

The area this happened in has steep hills right by the bay.

On other trails, I've seen bikers go down trails I have second thoughts of walking down.

Another stupid people stunt. How many rescue workers have been injured or killed while trying to save one of these bozos?

It appears that the medical marijuan that caused the accident in the first place is what saved his life at the bottom.

The interesting part is not the bike accident, but where it happened, Walnut Creek, CA. A veritable ground-zero of liberalism. A place where hauty gourmet coffeeshops with bespecled learned people strut their sophistication. Lots of Gore bumper stickers too. Makes that "Welcome to Nevada" sign look all the sweeter.

I'm a mountain bike rider and I wouldn't consider trail riding a stupid stunt. It's a great stress reliever.

Trail riding is one thing, taking stupid unessesary risks is another. But hey, knock yourself out. When you realize bicycles don't fly, try think of how natural selection works before the lights go out. And if you servive, paralized from the neck down strapped into a chair for the rest of your life,
you'll have plenty of time to think that maybe there are better ways to relieve stress, like gardening, fishing, just about anything you can't do.
I do enjoy watching the footage of those Darwin award competitions though. One lemming jumps off a cliff, then another, then another...

No mention of the trail bike.

This guy is only a Dimocrat. Those trail bikes are worth money. ;)
