My husband I go to a lot of weddings and they are usually nothing more than a chance to publicly display how much money a couple can burn up in 6 hours.

We got married in the college chapel (discount), got flowers, music and photos as gifts from friends. My wedding dress was $200.00, husband borrowed a three-piece suit. Had appetizer foods on lawn in front of chapel.

Total cost: no debt at all, little stress, and 23 years of love.

We had a backyard setting, (relieved) parents donated food, beer and cake. Mom took pictures. Mr RB had a rented tux, but didn't want to have to buy fancy shoes, so he borrowed some from the best man. However, he neglected to try them on until a few minutes before the ceremony. They were 4 sizes too small. He ended up wearing his high top tennis shoes with the Tux. We still laugh at the pictures.

I think we spent no more than $500.00, tops. I waited 23 years for the fancy ring. The one I got more than made up for the wait. We'll have our 25th in a few weeks.

Your modest wedding was sensible but poignant but sadly today the tables have turned and conspicious consumption is the name of the game.
From what I see today,romance,weddings,marriage-the values I grew up with as something to treasure-have all turned into this weird charade of status seeking and false illusions.
Maybe it will all come together in the next life when God is in command. As far as I'm concerned, this bitter earth offers nothing but illusions.

My dress was $250. Had it made by a local seamstress - it was pretty much made out of linen tablecloth material (white on white cotton with a sheen to it). It was easily the most comfortable dress I've ever worn - no itchy lace or annoying pearly thingies to deal with. Good thing it was comfortable, I ended up moving chairs in it just before the wedding started .

DH wore a gray suit - he had needed to buy one anyway so instead of spending the money on a tux he just bought a suit instead. I told all the guys (his bro, his dad, and my dad) to wear gray suits and white shirts (they all already had them) and I supplied matching ties for them all that I bought from the Lands End catalog.

My sister was my only bridesmaid (like his bro was for him), and it was so nice and easy to tell her "wear something that goes with a gray suit and a maroon tie". I told my mother and my MIL the same thing.

Bingo, instant color-coordinated wedding with very little effort!

The only thing I really didn't like was the headdress the florist sent me. I had wanted a wreath of greenery with a few white flowers in it, instead I got this wire circlet with sparse greenery and a daisy in the middle of it that looked like a miner's headlamp.
So I went out in the backyard, picked some attractive green weeds from next to where DH's motorcycle was parked, and stuck them in the circlet to fill it out.
It looked much better after that  .
