In early August 2004, Karl Rove, President Bushs top political advisor, was having lunch with a small group of journalists at the Oval Room, a restaurant across Lafayette Square from the White House. The talk off the record, unless Rove agreed to be quoted was about strategy in the presidential race.
Was Kerrys emphasis on his Vietnam record a mistake? Was Bush going to offer a full-scale defense of the war in Iraq? Would he push issues like Social Security reform? After the discussion touched on a number of heavy topics, I asked Rove what he thought of Michael Moores blastingly anti-Bush movie, Fahrenheit 9/11. Had it had an effect on the presidential race?
Its an artful piece of propaganda, Rove said.
Was that all? Had he seen the picture?
I plead guilty to violating the copyright laws of the United States by watching a bootleg DVD, Rove answered with a grin. I refuse to enrich [Moore], he added, giving the clear impression that he had a rather low opinion of the filmmaker.
With a little more prodding, Rove said he wasnt worried about the picture and did not see it playing a substantial role in the election. But he had watched it at a time when some others on the White House staff were saying they would not see it. Rove was too careful a man, and his mind too wide-ranging, not to want to judge for himself.
Moore would undoubtedly have been delighted by the image of Karl Rove peering at a fuzzy bootleg of Fahrenheit 9/11.

Right, but while the movie is still playing at the theaters there's no "original copy". Often time bootlegs are made by guys with camcorders taping off the actual movie screen at the theater.
I see what you mean. I assumed "Bootleg DVD" was a "bootleg of a DVD", but it could have been a DVD of a VHS or other tape recording.
Thanks!
I remember seeing that episode of Seinfeld.
Yeah but, you got to admit, it's not a bad thing that the entire Dummocrapic Party has aligned themselves with the Buffoon from Davidson. They are stuck with him forever whether they like it or not.
Ha, Ha, ha, Ha, Ha, Ha! What a wonderful analysis. I love the truth. It is too bad this will not get reported beyond the pages of National Review. Michael Moore has alot to thank Canada.
Like all of Moore's claims, there was just enough truth to be plausible until you look at the complete context upon which they fall apart.
No surprise. Moore's F911 was a Bush43 hit piece but in the end, just another liberal mirage.
Bookmarked to throw in my lib friend's faces whenever they mention the movie.
Oh, I couldn't care less what the 'Rats do...
I am more concerned about taxes, illegals, spending and the war...things that matter...the 'Rats can go to hell and nobody I know would miss them...their days as a national party are fading fast!
W needs to focus on enforcing the immigration laws, cutting federal spending and taxes and winning the "war on terrorism!" And that's what I care about! Not the morons in the 'Rat party and what they are doing...
So Michael Moore was lying, obviously lying, when he claimed F/911 perfomed well outside the Leftist bastions of New York, San Fran, and the Pacific Northwest. Why should this be a surprise to anyone?
What is shameful is that so many in the MSM took his obviously fraudulent assertions and reported them at face value. At a minumum, it should have been clear to all that Moore had no way of knowing whether what he was saying was true or not. But the MSM just passed along the lies with no critical analysis whatsoever.
"Moore would undoubtedly have been delighted by the image of Karl Rove peering at a fuzzy bootleg of Fahrenheit 9/11."
Blue movies...
Proves one thing: Always ask for the data whenever surprising assertions are made.
Great boxoffice statistic analysis deep in the article showing Moore lies once again, this time regarding performance in red states.
Great photo!
I go to a decidedly blue state church in Norman and almost got into fist fight with another member at a church league softball game. I'd started the conversation by saying that I'd like to see the movie but didn't have $7.00 for Moore. He responded by animatedly repeating most of (now proven to be) lies in the movie. I think to this day, he actually believes the war was about oil. To make matters worse he is member of OU faculty that to that point I had regarded as surely liberal but not raving looney liberal. We barely speak now.
My point, if there is one, is that IMHO that movie did in fact influence some people not prepared to dig for the facts. This movie could easily have cost Bush, Wisconsn, Minn and Michigan (after allowing for Dem vote fraud).
I've said on these pages before that we will look back on 2004 as the year the MSM dropped all prestence of objectivity and this is one more example how the MSM would not let the facts get in the way of attacking Bush.
