Throughout this Papacy there have been scattered reports of healings - but the Pope apparently didn't want his cardinals and assistants discussing these cases.
Now that he's gone, they are talking.

Good story ... horrible, horrible title.I agree. Giving credit to the pope for what God has done completely misses the point. I doubt that the pope would want that.

It's pretty much a given that Catholics know that any healing abilities come from God and go through the chosen human being. In fact, I was kind of amazed that you pointed it out since I've never heard anyone ever say that different charisms come from the human being.
Anyone know if the other Masses are being televised?
To: american colleen
Well, it's no small thing to give a human being the glory for God's works. :o)

I am not surprised that the pope prayed and people were healed!
And the prayer of faith will save the sick man, and the Lord will raise him up James 5:15
If anybody is a great role model of praying a prayer of faith, John Paul is...

And that's the way it ought to be. Says something about John Paul's honest love of God to not let people talk about his intercessory prayer for people, lest people think he was the channel and not God.
But now that he's gone, both facts, that he prayed and that people were healed show the power of faith, his openness to God, and the power of God.

You are correct but it's somewhat difficult to get precise theology in a title. So I'm OK with the title. The Pope was the conduit for God's work.

Now that he's gone, they are talking. Makes the beatification process much easier. I think it will still take a minimum of five years, though...

But yet the miracles are not counted towards the beatification, because they were while he was not yet in Heaven, right?
Isn't that the reasoning? That people must pray to God through the saint for healing, which, by virtue of it being granted, establishes that the saint is in Heaven, right?

The ability to heal people on earth is considered a strong sign of a blameless and holy life, which is necessary for the beatification.

The canonization process, like many things in the reign of this past pope, has been greatly weakened. The requirement for a miracle has been diluted, and the "devil's advocate" practically eliminated. In essence, all that it takes to be a saint today is to achieve ecclesiastical rock star status.
