One Man's Convictions Launched a Border Crusade
LA TImes ^ | 4/11/2005 | Jennifer Delson

Last fall, Vietnam veteran James Gilchrist, 56, was listening to George Putnam's talk show on KCAA-AM (1050). He often listens to conservative radio shows in his small home office in an Aliso Viejo planned community, where he proudly displays his Purple Heart and dog tags.He heard a guest on the show, Chris Simcox, complain about lax border enforcement. His words resonated with Gilchrist, who long wondered why communities in Orange County teemed with people who don't speak English.

Gilchrist called Simcox, a veteran crusader against illegal immigrants at the Arizona border.

Great tagline, isn't it? I made a comment on another thread earlier about how much I like it. Occutegirl, you said that's from a new bumper sticker??

who long wondered why communities in Orange County teemed with people who don't speak English

I lived in Orange County from 1975 to 1996, and in those twenty one years I saw parts of my town, and several surrounding towns, looking more and more like Mexican colonias. In towns like Santa Ana, that process has now been completed. Santa Ana's population is an estimated 90% hispanic, and a high percentage of those are illegals. Driving into that town is like driving into Tijuana Mexico.

Thank you President ClintonBush for all you've done for us.

What a good article. Gilcrest and Simcox are great patriotic heroes. Some day, school children will study their great efforts. I pray for all the minuteman project people every day. I pray for their effectiveness and safety. I pray that our country will be saved from this insane policy that exposes our children to danger and costs us billions we shouldn't pay for welfare and health care and God knows what else for uneducated who can't even speak English. It will stop. I know that one way or the other --IT WILL STOP. ====== My thoughts exactly, and the thoughts of many other American citizens. It is total insanity and it is deeply hurting our country.

Border 'showdown' is necessary

By Gregory M. Brent
The Costa Mesa resident is a 2004 graduate of Chapman University.

I have been increasingly troubled by some of the mainstream media's approach to both illegal immigration and the Minuteman Project, never more so than by Register columnist Yvette Cabrera's "Showdown shouldn't take place at border" [Local, April 3].

Despite claims by protesters and labels placed upon them by some news reporters and columnists, the volunteers of the Minuteman Project are not racists or armed vigilantes out apprehending illegal immigrants. They are concerned American citizens who are observing, documenting and reporting on some of illegal incursions that take place every day on our southern border with Mexico. The Minuteman volunteers are not there to apprehend or detain anybody. Their mission has been described by spokesman Mike McGarry as to "observe them, report them and get out of the way." The U.S. Border Patrol will handle all the resulting arrests that are to be made. And though some of the volunteers participating in the Minuteman Project are indeed armed, it is as a means of self-defense to be used only as a last resort, and not as a tool of personal law enforcement.

Perhaps the most frustrating aspect of Cabrera's article is the contention she makes that the news media are partly responsible for causing hysteria and concern that has led to illegal immigration getting such a negative portrayal in the eyes of so many of our citzens - as if the reality of illegal immigration were not reason enough for concern. While the phrasing of some of the examples of coverage she gave is disconcerting, such as references to a "sea of brown faces," other examples she gave were arguably statements of fact. When you have over 1 million arrests at the border a year, and have a current illegal immigrant population of 11 million of which 6 million are Mexican nationals - as reported by the Pew Hispanic Research Center - there is indeed a "northward influx" and an "overwhelming flood" that need to be addressed.

Terms like "hunted out" and "herded" are indeed dehumanizing and shouldn't be used, but terms like "apprehended" and "detained" are more than appropriate. We are indeed talking about human beings and not animals, just as Cabrera insists, but remember they are also criminals, some guilty only of breaking immigration laws as first-time offenders while others are attempting to re-enter the country after being deported, which is a felony. Some others are murderers, rapists and drug smugglers; not every one who comes here has honest intentions or a clean background.

But pro-illegal immigrant advocates always insist on portraying every single illegal immigrant as someone just trying to come and work a job that American citizens won't take and find a better life for his family in the United States. As a result, for many people the resulting issue has become merely a case of an undocumented working force. Post-9/11 security concerns, as well of concerns about violent criminals and infectious diseases such as TB coming over the border, often go unheeded.

A showdown on the issue in Washington is definitely long overdue. Until that happens, the showdown currently under way in Arizona is better than nothing - and it may indeed help bring about that showdown in the nation's capital.

A lot of MSM outlets are going to be eating their words by the end of April.

No, wait, strike that. Should eat their words. Let's see how many have the integrity to do so...

The Minutemen are showing us not only how to seal our borders and protect our national security, they are demonstrating how we, the people, can take back our country from the political establishment.

Which fence would you rather cross if you were sneaking past the Border patrol?

Lets make the Ports of Entry the choice of everyone coming to America.

Some questions and ideas for you to think about.
What do you think would happen if a popular football or other sports star was to start off the project by donating 5 or 25 million dollars to build fences on private property that adjoins the border?

Then a few more sport stars each throw in a couple of million of their own money while asking all "True Americans" to send just one hours wages to the FENCE FUND?

Do you think that the politicians would be able to stop this from growing out of control and the voters demanding that the Feds "fence our land"?

Do you think the politicians would listen or ignore a million calls a day to their offices?

Never underestimate what the American people can do when they decide they want to do it.

While I'm at it, we could start a "Name and Shame List" of companies that hire illegals. Name the banks that loan money to a tax number when the illegal doesn't have a phony Social Security number. Name the mortgage companies that favor home loans to illegals, using our money for their downpayment.

If you have ideas or questions, throw them in the pot here. I'm sure there's FReeper who can answer most of the questions or critique your ideas.

Do you have any ideas on how to get this started?

We need to keep the fire burning while the media is watching and reporting.

I am shocked, shocked I tell you, that the LA Times is printing a story as fair as this one. It is totally out of character. :)
