If the word of god isn't intended to compel us to live a joyous, meaningful life than what could it possibly be about?

There is much joy in serving God through His son Jesus Christ. It makes us empty vessels before God, to be filled by His will for our lives.

This is different from us relying on our own sense of "rightness" and "goodness" because those are based on our terms, not God's.
