We in the Land of Lincoln are proud to claim Jill stanek as our own. We who follow Christ are proud to claim John Paul II as our brother.

Nice article, thanks.

The Chris Matthews' liberal-Catholic types, who now call for a more "progressive" pope, don't get it that truth doesn't change with the times, nor is truth determined by humans.

I don't get it either. They praised the Pope for his unwavering beliefs yet, they want a new Pope more “progressive.”

It is only in recent decades that abortion has become only relatively safe...

For the mother! The baby dies nearly 100% of the time. (I know you meant that.)

Pray for our nation. Pray that this monstrosity called abortion ends in our lifetimes.

Did the Pope hedge on creationism vs. evolution? I believe the root of the lack of respect for the sanctity of life is the belief in evolution. When we believe we came from slime all other true belief unravels from there. Evolution would make us no better than animals so why not act like beasts. Survival of the fittest becomes the mantra of an evolution believing society. We must hold the line on the truth of creation. It is so easy unless you are well studied to accept what so many scientist believe to be true. We must have a true reverence for the Word of God and believe that what it says is true and the LORD will show it to us. (I disavowed evolution as an atheist so I did not need to have to believe it wrong strictly on the basis of scripture though I have since learned that when the Bible says it, it is true.)

"Did the Pope hedge on creationism vs. evolution?"

Did he hedge?
No.
Like most Catholics, the Pope matter-of-factly accepted evolution as a feature of the natural world, like planetary orbits or gravity.
And like most devout Catholics, the Pope did not see any conflict between accepting the science of evolution and the sanctity of human life.

As a priest once put it to me: "God made the world and everyone in it. Evolution is how He did it. So what? (Et alors?)"

An old chestnut of the Catholic approach to science and the Bible is: "The Bible teaches you how to go to Heaven, not how the heavens go."

So no, the Pope didn't hedge on creationism versus evolution. The Pope and the Church accept evolution, and teach it. Intelligent design? Of course. But over the course of billions of years, not 6000 or so. If you attend Catholic school, you will be taught the theory of evolution in biology class. In theology class you will be taught intelligent design and to understand Genesis as a sacred poem, full of beautiful allegorical language. Creationism/evolution is not a battle front in the Catholic Church. God made us. Evolution is how. Now let's focus on being good people - this is the Catholic approach.

I pray for the day when the belief in evolution will be a thing of the past overcome by the truth as revealed in God's word. I respectfully disagree.
