From Modesto Bee's website:

Toll worker shot on Golden Gate Bridge

The Associated Press
Last Updated: April 9, 2005, 10:55:17 PM PDT

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - A female toll collector has been shot on the Golden Gate Bridge.

The unidentified toll collector was shot by a motorist who had exited his car in toll lane 7, according to bridge spokeswoman Mary Currie.

The motorist fled south on foot toward San Francisco, pursued by Golden Gate Bridge police. He was shot in the leg and taken into custody, according to Officer Mark Johnston of the California Highway Patrol.

The motorist was driving a stolen car, said Johnston.

The suspect and toll worker were both taken to San Francisco General Hospital. The toll collector's injury was serious, said Johnston. But Currie said it was not believed to be life-threatening.

I am watching an update of the story as I type. The wounds for neither the toll-taker nor the shooter are life-threatening.

What a moron. He steals a car, forgets that he doesn't have enough money to pay the toll, and then shoots the toll worker. A "simple" car theft rap turns into attempted murder.

Don't do the crime if you can't pay the dime.

What happens anyway, if you don't have enough for the toll? Do they simply tell you to turn around and go back? The fool could've turned back around, gone to Sausalito and mugged some unsuspecting tourist of their money, gotten back into his car and made it thru the toll into San Francisco. Geesh! Aren't there any intelligent criminals anymore?!

The toll collectors could have given away a look that she knew the car was stolen....I would guess that the cameras read the plates at that plaza, and it might come back "hot" rather quick.

I heard the story of the plate readers on the port of entries between CA and Mexico. They know who has left, who is coming, etc, and can come up with a profile very quickly based on that information.

This is causing a big traffic backup. Commuters may want to take the tunnel.
