Indian Communists want India to snap ties with Israel

The CPI(M)[Communist Party of India - Marxist], at its congress today, adopted a resolution condemning ‘‘Israel’s brutal occupation since 1967 of Palestinian territories’’ and demanded that the Indian ‘‘government ceases its military cooperation with and all military procurement from Israel’’.

The resolution was moved by none other than West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharya. The party probably wanted to dispel majority opinion outside Left circles that Bhattacharjee is not exactly a hardliner and is charting out a pragmatic economic course in his home state. The resolution was seconded by senior Kerala-based leader M.A. Baby.

Advertisement Citibank That apart, the resolution was worded very harshly, especially in respect of the demand being placed before the Indian government. ‘‘It (the Indian government) cannot pay lip service to the Palestinian cause and yet continue to forge military ties with Israel,’’ it said. The CPI(M) insisted that India return to a policy of genuine non-alignment and play its due international role in taking up the illegal occupation of Palestine.

The CPI(M) went to the extent of insisting, ‘‘Unless Israel vacates this illegal occupation, India must also demand sanctions on Israel in all international fora.’’ In fact, senior Politburo member Prakash Karat told reporters that the party wanted the UPA government to completely reverse a policy shift that had been introduced by the BJP in this respect.

The Communists are part of the coalition that rules India today. They are anti-US and anti-Israel and want an India-China alliance.

I would presume you have not been following Indian Politics lately, Communists keep on making demands which even they know are not going to be fulfilled, this is just an extension of that. Its not what they say but what they do that would count. India will continue to buy weapons from Israel and Communists would continue babbling. That's it.

Technically, they are not part of the coalition. They've chosen to support from outside. In many ways they are powerless because if they choose to withdraw support, the opposition, the BJP, can come into power if another election is held. People will vote for a stable government and actions of the Communists will force them to vote BJP.

My understanding is that they command more than a quarter of the seats required to keep the Congress party in power. The Congress party itself is left and anti-US. From what I know they won elections with the help of the Maoist guerillas in regions where they are active

I know enough about Indian politics - thank you. Spin stories wont work with me. India has a large communist following and the present Congress government had a tacit alliance with the Maoist guerillas to win elections. I wonder why none points to the rising Maoist insurgency in India.

The Communists in India have openly feted Chavez and other loonies. Now these pigs support terrorists who kill innocent people in malls.

How much power they have is a well known fact do they really use it to get there every demand met.
An example, left wants oil prices in India not to go up despite the historic high in oil rates. Within the next 15 days government would raise the prices. Technically left should withdraw support and the government would fall. Lets see if it materializes and if doesn't then thats the point I want to make. Left is all about speak nd no action till its about their holy cows(Read PSU) and Israel is not one.
