LOS ANGELES (AP) - California First Lady Maria Shriver said Friday that having her husband serving as governor was hard on their family and that she would prefer to see Arnold Schwarzenegger "back home" instead of run for president.
"While I was always raised to believe that public service is the most noble calling, it's all-encompassing," Shriver said on "The Oprah Winfrey Show. "And it's tough, if you have young children. And it's a 24-hours-a-day, seven-days-a-week job. I want him home."
Appearing on the show alongside her mother, Eunice Kennedy Shriver, Shriver repeated several times that if she had her way, Schwarzenegger would devote more time to his family life and less to his public life.
Asked what she thought about the possibility of her Austria-born husband seeking the U.S. presidency if the Constitution were amended to allow it, for example, Shriver was unequivocal.
"I want him back home, actually," she said.
When Winfrey, a friend of Shriver's, followed up by asking, "You want him home?" Shriver responded: "I want him back."
The First Lady also offered a light-hearted glimpse into Schwarzenegger's style as a husband and father. One of Schwarzenegger's pet peeves, she said, is having clothes and shoes put away. He has called from the Capitol to check whether the children have done their laundry and hidden clothes or thrown them in the fireplace if they were not in their proper place when he returned.
Shriver and Schwarzenegger will celebrate their 19th wedding anniversary April 26. The governor spends three or four days a week in Sacramento, while Shriver and their four children live in Los Angeles' Brentwood district.
Shriver's comments raised questions about whether she is encouraging her husband not to seek re-election next year. Schwarzenegger, a Republican, has opened an account to raise campaign funds, but he does not have to formally decide for several months.
Margita Thompson, a spokeswoman for the governor, said the governor is focused on his 2005 agenda and has not decided whether to run again.
She has nothing to worry about.
The "Extortionator" needs to head home, back to Austria.
It isn't even a possibility. Why did this take such a long and heartfelt answer? Showboat.
SCHWARZENEGGER BURNS CLOTHES OF DISOBEDIENT CHILDRENTERMINATOR star ARNOLD SCHWARZENEGGER is so adamant his children do their laundry, he'll often set fire to any of their dirty clothes he finds laying around.
The California Governor is a stickler for neatness around the house, and he believes that all of his four children should be very disciplined when it comes to clearing up after themselves.
His wife MARIA SHRIVER says, "He's strict about laundry. I go, 'Arnold, you're running a state - don't worry about the laundry!' And he will call me, from the Capitol (asking), 'Have they done the laundry? If I come home and they haven't done the laundry, I'm telling you, there are no play dates!'
"He goes around our house, taking the kids' clothes that they leave. He throws it in the fire, or he hides it and they don't ever get it back... And he is serious about it. I am scared to death too!"
But the actor-turned-politician isn't just worried about his home staying in order - he also gets furious if his offspring abuse the environment.
She adds, "If you don't turn out the lights, he takes the lights out of the ceiling! I keep trying to tell him he has other things on his plate, but he goes, 'We have an energy crisis, the children have no respect for the energy!'"
Ironically, Shriver had to get laundry lessons from her disciplined children, because her mother didn't teach her how to carry out the domestic task when she was growing up.
She is such a girly-woman.
After all, he is the Running Man.
Maria sounds as though she was ignorant of the fact that political life would require so much of a representatives time, and keep a loved one away from family for extended periods. She should consider acting.
She is.
Maria SHRIVER ignorant of political life?
Brentwood.... isn't that OJ's old slashing ground?
Typical Kennedy-Shriver syndrome.
Actually, Maria looked great on that show, and what they are not printing is how glowingly she spoke of her husband the Governor. Her mom, however, came across as an anorexic El Strango.
Her Mother was a strango who didnt mind watching her husband have affairs with movie stars.
Wait that wasnt her Mother, it was Rose , Teds Mother. My mistake.
Her mother was the driving force behind the special Olympics. I am sure there are children of FRers who have benefited from Special Olympics participation.

The Special Olympics is a great program. I am reminded, however, that the Kennedy clan lobotomized one of their own because she was mentally retarded--thus reducing that poor woman to a complete shell of human being.
Old Joe had that done to eldest daughter Rosemary behind the back of his wife who never forgave him for it.
she's not the only one that "wants him back home" LOL
A fascist control freak, the Kindergarten Cop on steroids, not to mention, a total hypocrite.
Arnold is guilty of operating an incinerator in a Critical Air Basin. Burning clothes produces dioxins. The Southern California Air Quality Management District should cite him for operating an illegal incinerator emitting cancer-causing chemicals, and have done so for far less serious offenses. I am certain the fines would be in the tens of thousands of dollars. I am not kidding.
I dont think she was as mentally retarded as she liked to have sex , and she wasnt a man. he did nothing to the boys for the same thing./
Yes, I'm not so ignorant of Ms. SHRIVER's family history in politics. I guess 'acting' runs in the family.
