In the wake of Terri Schiavo's death, a Brooklyn assemblyman has introduced "Terri's Law" a bill that would prohibit removing a feeding tube without the patient's written consent. William Colton told The Post he wants to make it more difficult to pull a feeding tube if a patient's wishes are in question and to avoid ugly fights in New York like the one that surrounded the Schiavo case in Florida.
"Food and water should not be something someone should be deprived of lightly," said Colton, a Democrat.
"This is not an extreme or artificial means of preserving human life," he added. "It's a basic human need, and depriving it shouldn't be made without the expressed intent of the person."
Under the bill, a patient who had made a living will or other document simply stating that he or she does not want life-sustaining measures would still receive and keep a feeding tube.
If he or she does not want to be connected to a feeding tube or wants that tube disconnected it would have to be specifically stated in writing by the patient.

I am happy....i hope it starts a Domino effect
I will email my state reps in Illinois the article. The more states with such laws the better it will be.
The NY democrats are about as liberal as one can get. If they're siding with Terri, you can bet your bottom dollar the Terri case is backfiring on the democrats.
To me, it's Terri and those who may suffer like her, not politics, but I keep reading articles by the left wing press that claims "The Republicans will be punished by the American people for getting involved".
My guess is this democrat wants to jump off the Cult of Death's sinking ship while there's still a chance to escape.
GOD BLESS YOU, MR. COLTON
Terri -- Always in Our Hearts
It is starting a Domino effect, but the pro-murder of innocent people are fighting back.
The Schiavo debate comes to Virginia
http://home.hamptonroads.com/stories/story.cfm?story=84635&ran=44511
Providing nutrition is not an artificial way of keeping someone alive.
So says Chesapeake Del. John Cosgrove, who joins fellow Republicans Bob Marshall of Manassas and Richard Black of Sterling, in advocating a re-write of Virginia law in the wake of Terri Schiavos death.
According to the Associated Press, Marshall plans to introduce legislation that would preclude withholding water and nourishment to severely brain-damaged patients unless they leave clear, written directives otherwise.
At a minimum we need to say that you cant just starve someone to death if there is no written declaration by the person in question, Marshall said.
....
..... then you get to the second part of the article:
"Inserting a feeding tube is indisputably an artificial means of extending life. It may be less invasive that a ventilator. But if the body cannot function without a feeding tube, then describing it as natural is a misnomer.
The keys to whether life should be extended artificially in that way are the patients condition and the patients wishes. If those wishes are not known, then a representative, designated either by the patient or by the courts, weighs the medical evidence and makes an informed decision.
End-of-life care raises some of the most wrenching questions facing mankind. But politicians should not be allowed to impose their personal moral code on everyone else. Nor should they be allowed to misrepresent natural and humane processes as something else."
=====
Translation: ONLY JUDGES are allowed to do that, i.e. only judges should make laws and Congress should shut up and sit down.
This man deserves our support and encouragement:

Thousands of Americans require feeding tubes and are living long and happy lives. Imagine how these people feel when they hear other people say they're not worthy of life without written consent!!
To democrats, it's easy to kill some one else that's considered an inconvenience, isn't it?
God bless Mr. Colton. This cuts across every demographic and politcal line.
Another woman is being hydrated and starved to death. For those who don't know background, story is at end of contacts.

MATTERS OF LIFE AND DEATH
Granddaughter yanks grandma's feeding tube
81-year-old neither terminally ill, comatose, nor in vegetative state

In a situation recalling the recent death of Terri Schiavo in Florida, an 81-year-old widow, denied nourishment and fluids for nearly two weeks, is clinging to life in a hospice in LaGrange, Ga., while her immediate family fights desperately to save her life before she dies of starvation and dehydration.
Mae Magouirk was neither terminally ill, comatose nor in a "vegetative state," when Hospice-LaGrange accepted her as a patient about two weeks ago upon the request of her granddaughter, Beth Gaddy, 36, an elementary school teacher.
Also upon Gaddy's request and without prior legal authority, since March 28 Hospice-LaGrange has denied Magouirk normal nourishment or fluids via a feeding tube through her nose or fluids via an IV. She has been kept sedated with morphine and ativan, a powerful tranquillizer.
Her nephew, Ken Mullinax, told WorldNetDaily that although Magouirk is given morphine and ativan, she has not received any medication to keep her eyes lubricated during her forced dehydration.
"They haven't given her anything like that for two weeks," said Mullinax. "She can't produce tears."
The dehydration is being done in defiance of Magouirk's specific wishes, which she set down in a "living will," and without agreement of her closest living next-of-kin, two siblings and a nephew: A. Byron McLeod, 64, of Anniston, Ga.; Ruth Mullinax, 74, of Birmingham, Ala.; and Ruth Mullinax's son, Ken Mullinax.
Magouirk's husband and only child, a son, are both deceased.
In her living will, Magouirk stated that fluids and nourishment were to be withheld only if she were either comatose or "vegetative," and she is neither. Nor is she terminally ill, which is generally a requirement for admission to a hospice.
Magouirk lives alone in LaGrange, though because of glaucoma she relied on her granddaughter, Beth Gaddy, to bring her food and do errands.

As you stated Starwise, this man needs our support and encourgement. I totally agree!!
Nic, you referred to the thread * It's happening again *, this time, in Georgia.
I had an interesting conversation with a friend in the past couple of weeks. Her grandma had an intestinal blockage. She went to the hospital and the family was told she couldn't survive an operation or - in other words,(my translation), she isn't worth the time or money.
The grandma's daughter, a nurse, listened to the godless doctor and opted for Dehydration and also Starvation. It was the same thing as for Terri, no ice chips, even tho grandma cried out in pain and pleaded for water. This went on for a horrible two weeks.
Did this happen recently - NO - it happened in 1977. I asked my friend, what was listed as cause of death on the Death Certificate. I fully expected the doctor to have covered is behind and listed intestinal blockage, as the cause of death. I was shocked to hear, the cause of death was documented on the certificate as - DEHYDRATION. I'm planning on having my friend get a copy of the Death Certificate, to prove how long this hidious horror has been going on.
As with Terri, it was a very torturous death for my friend's grandma. She is haunted by the fact that she wasn't strong enough to fight the wishes of the Doctor, her mom and her aunt, and stop it. Also, as with Terri, the Grandma had no Wish to Die, but instead was literally FORCED TO DIE.
I have a completely different view of our so called Medical Community. I'm sickened by all their DOUBLE TALKING, CODED WORDS OF DEATH. Some Medical people/Doctors are nothing but Angels of DEATH.
Oh, pepper, how absolutely horrible and so very tragic. I cannot believe this. 1977???? (A nurse posted that she stopped being a nurse at hospice (or altogether) 15 years ago because, I think she said it was happening then...she said she saw the "writing on the wall."
What does she think about Terri's family? What does she think about Felos? Did the doctor lie to her and say it would be a "euphoric" and "peaceful" way to die? Is she interested in getting involved to speak out against this? (I'm sure she might feel that she'd be doing a good against the wrong she feels with her grandma....). I cannot imagine her mom and aunt also agreed with the doctor.
This is so sick what doctors, lawyers, and judges are doing.
