Actually it has happened. They discovered oil on Terminal Island at Long Beach and pumped it all out and the island sunk. Parts are now below sea level
Subsidence is also a big issue in the Houston area. They have pumped a world of oil out of the strata over the last hundred years or so. Land, like Long Beach, is close or at sea level.
Once valuable real estate is likely to become a part of the Gulf.

Subsidence is also a big issue in the Houston area. The subsidence in the Houston area is attributable to water wells drilled in the 1940s. There is extensive documentation of this. In some places it's reached as much as nine feet.
