CAIRO At least two people have been killed and 19 injured following an explosion in a popular outdoor bazaar in Cairo.
Officials say an American man is one of the dead while two Americans are among those injured.
Police are investigating the cause of the blast. However, several witnesses say the explosion seemed to have been set off by a man on a motorcycle.
The blast took place in a bazaar that's popular with tourists.
Investigators say a French woman has also been killed while people from several other countries are among the injured.
bump.....
They're getting dumber.
I posted the title as it was published, but FYI, the city name is misspelled. It should be "Cairo".
CAIRO (Reuters) - An Egyptian actor starring in a new Hollywood blockbuster set during the Crusades says the movie will enhance Western understanding of the Arab and Muslim world rather than underscore old stereotypes, as some had feared.
Khaled El Nabawy expects "Kingdom of Heaven", which portrays a 12th Century Christian-Muslim battle for Jerusalem, to advance rather than harm dialogue and understanding between the faiths.
"It's good timing. It's time for the West to know more about us," said Nabawy, who plays the part of a Muslim religious leader in the film directed by Ridley Scott and set for a May release.
"We know more about the West than they know about us. When you don't know me, you're going to judge me in a bad way, which is risky," Nabawy told Reuters in Cairo. "We are not terrorists. We are very civilised and our history is a witness to this."
I lived in Cairo for a number of years. Once Mubarek dies there would be an all out play for power. The fundamentalists are on the rise. Mubarek needs to speed up the reforms and democracy before the nut jobs capture a wonderful country filled with wonderful people.
I thought that recently Mubarek consented to other names on the next election's ballot. Know anything about that? My memory fails me on this one.
That is true. Mubarek has said will add more than one to the ballot. When I lived there Mubarek ran against a hand chosen opponent. He was an editor and the paper where he was the editor in chief endorsed Mubarek over him. That was democracy in Egypt at the time.
Reportedly, two of the four americans just got out of the Air Force and one of them (michiel) served in Iraq. Michiel is my secretaries cousin. Below is a copy of the email she received.
At 5:45 on Thursday, April 7, there was an explosion in Cairo Egypt. Leaving at least four dead and 18 wounded. Among the wounded were Americans, Michiel Kiel (Ten Haaf), Eric Mirrandette and Chris Ross. Among the dead, was their brother and friend, Alex Mirandette. The boys were in an outdoor mall when a man on a motor bike detonated a bomb right next to the boys, also killing himself. It appears that the four Americans were the target of the attack.
Julie, Teresa and Rick (Eric and Alex's parents) are leaving this evening for Cairo. Please pray for safe travel and also safety while in Cairo.
Eric, Chris and Michiel are still in intensive care and all three have sustained burns and shrapnel wounds. And all have had some sort of surgery. Michiel has burns on his legs and arms and shrapnel wounds. Eric is in critical condition with internal injuries and a collapsed lung. Chris has facial and body wounds. A nail was removed from his eye.
The American Embassy has been in constant contact with me and the other families. We thank God for their support and the care and protection which they have and continue to provide our boys and the family members which will soon be there.
Michiel was able to identify the body of Alex, however, Chris and Eric have yet to find out that Alex has died. The boys will be told by Alex's parents and Julie. May God give them strength!
Please remember the boys and our families as we go through this difficult time. Thank you for your love and support. Linda Kiel
Thank you.
