It's a gorgeous setting, but one has to ask why sane people would choose to live in Northern California any more. Statistically, violent attacks like this are much rarer in this area than in most other major metropolitan areas. Most of our criminals are devoted to pursuing "quality of life" crimes. This was a very unusual incident.

You may be right. I wasn't basing my statement strictly on crime statistics, though. It's purely a personal sense, I know that other people feel quite differently about the area. For myself, I lived in the Bay area for six months and had to move. I simply couldn't stand it any longer.

This was a very unusual incident.Do you mean Berkeley alone, the East Bay or the Bay area? Oakland is very violent. And there are lots of places in Berkeley that are quite unsafe to walk at night.
