Battle over union dues (CA Ballot Measure Aimed At Public Employee Union Goons)

Battle over union dues
A group led by an ally of the governor is funding the 'employee consent' bill.

By Andy Furillo -- Bee Capitol Bureau Published 2:15 am PDT Thursday, April 7, 2005

A pro-business group whose leader is closely connected to Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger is funding the signature-gathering effort to make it tougher for public employee unions to spend their members' dues money on political campaigns.

The Small Business Action Committee has contributed $375,000 to the Coalition for Employee Rights, which is trying to get the "employee consent" measure on a possible special election ballot this November. The committee is headed by Joel Fox, the former president of the Howard Jarvis Taxpayers Association who worked as senior policy consultant to Schwarzenegger during the 2003 recall.

A Schwarzenegger spokesman said that at the moment, the administration has "no intention or interest" in participating in what is shaping up as a volatile fight between unions that view the initiative as an attack on their political viability and proponents who say they are only protecting the political choices of public employees.

(snip)

The spokesman, Rob Stutzman, said the initiative is "not part of the reform package the governor has put forward."

Union leaders view the Fox organization's support as evidence of a gubernatorial endorsement.

(snip)

"When small business does well, the entire economy does well, and big businesses recognize that," said Fox, who also took part in the failed Proposition 226 campaign in 1998 that would have forced private as well as public employee unions to get approval from their members before spending dues money on politics. "Big business realizes it is built on the back of small business. A lot of their subcontractors are smaller businesses. We bring them together to fight for a business-friendly California."

Am I the only one who remembers the horrific battle in June, 1998 over Prop 226 that used a shotgun, instead of this rifle, aimed at all unions instead of just government unions like this one?

Prop 226 got past, present and future unions so upset and motivated, it's what brought CA's worst Governor to office before eventually being Recalled!!!

I'm gonna support this measure above all others!!! This is a core issue in CA, believe it, or not!!!

This measure is more correctly focused on the real culprits! "Closed Shop" Public Employee Unions that spend dues on leftist politics without permission of the dues payors!!!

The full article spells out where the money is coming from and why the Governor is shying away from this one and pushing the other four measures. (he's in enough trouble with the unions already)

It should be flat out illegal for public employee unions to spend a dime on politics. Nothing prevents individuals from contributing personally if they so choose.

It wasn't too long ago I saw a statistic that said 90% of union political contributions go to Democratic coffers while 60% of the union members vote Republican. Unbelievable. And union leaders wonder why they're losing members.

"And union leaders wonder why they're losing members."

Not to take away from your excellent point, but if you'll check, the private sector unions are losing members, but the public sector unions are agressively growing!!!

Prop 226 did get unions upset and motivated. IIRC, Prop 226 "required" unions get written permission from members for dues to be used for political purposes. Has that been upheld? Is it being followed? I have my doubts.

These union ads against Arnold are LIES. BOLD. UNABASHED. Since when it a 401K "risking in the stock market" but CalPers investing pension dollars in mutuals somehow a "guarantee"? Riiiight.

The unions have a SHOCKING amount of money and are flooding the airwaves more aggressively than at any off-year time than I can recall in CA.

Well in CA, thanks to Grey Davis, public employees are required by law to pay union dues even if you are not a union member. This is defended as the union needing the dues from you since they're negotiating employment compesation on your behalf too. You essentially can't work in entertainment without being in a union.

Not to mention that both unions are completely impotent when it comes to serving the members best interests.. well.. perhaps impotent is the incorrect term.. makes it sound like they have no power to use..
They prefer to spend their time and money lobbying for leftwing causes and candidates than serving their members interests...

"This is by far the most important measure on the ballot."

Well it has more effective teeth in it than the four toothless, watered down measures the Governor's putting his weight and name behind!!!

Does anybody here remember my recent predictions that that the unions would effectively terminate the Terminator/Governator??? Prop 226 should have been a real eye-opener to everyone about the unbelieveable power of CA's public employee unions!

The polls had 226 ahead by over 70% and suddenly the unions woke up and smote the devilish proposition!!! It got them on the internet; It go them organized; It got them motivated to elect Gray Davis who became their love slave!!!

We must all get behind this new one as it's the "fight to the finish" for CA!!!

You may be a newzjunkey, but you need to become a recent history junkey! The most excellent ballot measure was narrowly defeated by the energized yooonyuns in June 1998 and Gray Davis was elected that November!!! (try to remember...)
