HOUSTON -- An off-duty police officer and a manager at a southeast Houston pawnshop shot two gunmen during an attempted robbery, authorities told Local 2.

The robbery and shooting took place at the Magnolia Pawn Shop, on Evergreen at Lawndale.

The Brookside Village police officer was working an extra job at the Magnolia Pawn Shop on Evergreen at Lawndale when four armed men tried to rob the store shortly after 2 p.m., officials said. Gunfire was exchanged and two of the suspected robbers were hit.

Investigators said one gunman died at the scene. Three others escaped, but one of them is believed to have received a gunshot wound to the stomach.

Blood, bullets and glass were scattered throughout the store, police tell Local 2.

"Things happened very, very quickly. The assault rifle that one of the suspects was carrying appears to be like an SKS AK-47 type of weapon with a large banana clip," said Sgt. C.P. Abbey, with the Houston Police Department.

The getaway car was found near the scene.

Houston police searched the 1000 block of Evergreen for the gunmen.

One of the getaway cars was found near the scene.

Hospitals have also been asked to be on the lookout for gunshot victims seeking treatment.

No one else was injured.

The manager and police officer were taken by surprise, outnumbered two to one, and at least one of the rogues had a machine gun - and they still managed to defend themselves. That's pretty damned good if you ask me.

I've never understood why thugs would rob a pawn shop. A place that sells guns. Duh!

I'm going to have to make an ongoing post "A head shot is better" if we keep getting this "wounded" perp stories. I think it's cheaper to bury the perp than to give him room and board for a year or two while he learns new robbery/assault/murdering skills in the pen.

BTW, it has been statistically proven that after you bury a thug, he doesn't commit any more crimes.

SKS AK-47

OK, which is it? An SKS or an AK-47? No, they do not look the same.

Even the cops are less than informed when it comes to weapon identification.

Texas: Store owner shoots [and kills] suspect [armed robber]

An attempted robbery at a grocery store in South Laredo late Monday left the suspected robber dead and a rescuer seriously injured.

Officials said 19-year-old David Rivera was dressed in black, had a handkerchief over his face and was armed with a rifle when he attempted to rob two women outside of a "beer run" drive-thru in the 3300 block of Santa Barbara. As the women were accosted, the owner of the El H-Evito grocery store next door ran outside to intervene.

Owner Manuel Garcia, 59, was shot in the left hip, but he managed to return fire from 10 feet away, hitting Rivera in the head, said County Court-at-Law Judge Jesus "Chuy" Garza.

Nice work. One down and number two gonna show up at an emergency room somewhere or he's dead too. I do love a happy ending - especially when it's a double header.

"The assault rifle that one of the suspects was carrying appears to be like an SKS AK-47 type of weapon with a large banana clip"

Let's give the officer the benefit of the doubt and put "or" between sks or ak47. I'm sure that's what he meant and that 2 letter word was lost in the confusion.

...but they can still vote in Chicago.

Yeah, some places in Texas too.

I gotta say, the humor crossed my mind of voting for my Grama who passed away 21 months ago. She was a yellow-dog-democrat and we regularly had political disagreements. I sat with her for the last few weeks of her life in the hospital, she was in good humor. One day, knowing her situation, she popped up and said, "Well, your vote will finally count next time. I won't be here to cancel you out." She laughed. I smiled a little.

Well, up came the November election and when I went to early voting it was with a smile that I thought - "Hmmm... I could vote for her too." LOL... Her name was still right there on the roll.

I didn't do it. I'm not of that persuasion. But, it sure gave me a chuckle thinkin' about it.
