It really didn't seem like too unreasonable of a question to me. Most of the people who have thought to respond thus far have basically stated or implied that they don't really know what it's for, despite assuring me that this question has been asked and answered many times before. I'm not sure how they reconcile those two things - it seems odd that this question can be asked so many times, and yet nobody seems to remember the answer, but there you go. Anyway, someone must know, so I guess I'll just hang on and wait for that someone to come by.
