I was just kidding on the cheese thingy. I love it there too.

Escape to Wisconsin. (Old, VERY popular bumper sticker. Perhaps you remember it, Gramma?)

High-quality beer. I live about a mile from my own hometown brewery:

I enjoy it thoroughly (!), but any fine quality beer will suit me. I can't drink the bigs: miller, bud, etc. The preservatives give me a wicked headache, and I like don't care much for beer made with rice.

Guinness suits me just fine for one or two, but it's a bit pricy for more than that. We finally have a place in town that has Guinness on tap (hallelujah). I don't like the canned stuff.

I like the classic half-and-half, but I would never call it a Black and Tan (spit) because of the history involved.

I don't like liquor, and wine is dangerous for me, because I tend to drink it like kool-aid and get tragically drunk. Yet I will have a bottle with a fine steak (blue).

My check was snail-mailed on 4/4/05. It's five dollars less than last time because my property taxes went up $1,000 for the year!

I am totally embarrassed by West Virginia's place on that chart. Come on you guys, you can do better than that.

OUCH OUCH OUCH OUCH OUCH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Dang, that's a lot of money!

I'm out here in CA, and my taxes, believe it or not, are a little bit LESS than my parent's house in northern WI. I was blown away when I found that out. Now....they ARE on water...but not a real NICE lake.

Thanks for the donation....and let's work to UNelect whoever helped raise your taxes!

Yep. You have to request to have your name ON the list, not the other way around.

I'd love to someday join you in a Staubs, Ski. Sounds like good stuff.

I know what you mean about the preservatives--that's why many times I opt for a German beer (ESPECIALLY when I'm in Germany, where brewing regulations don't require preservatives.) I can drink and drink all the local beer I like, and wake up the next morning ready to perform ALL my scheduled heart surgeries. ;-)

And give me a Heine ANY day. Amsterdam's jewel. Ahhh. If you haven't been to Amsterdam, but someday might go, be sure to hit the Heineken Brewery--"The Heineken Experience," as they call it--the visitor integrated tour is GREAT.

And as for half and halfs versus black and tans, in my neck of the woods, a black and tan is Guinness and Bass, while a half and half is Guinness and Harp. I prefer the former, but will NEVER turn down the latter. ;-)

Rumps Bottoms up!

Bill Clinton & Rubin helped raise my taxes with the Consumer Price Index (CPI) - our county has more than a 20% poverty level. Penalized because we own, not rent.

Then, the schools conned us into voting for a million $ educational bond - THEN, jobs shortage and people having to move, taking their kids, naturally. Result: Schools no longer crowded.

Not to "beat up" on midwesterners, but I'd sure love to know why they move to a small rural town and then want to sophisticate it with a 50,000 sq.ft. (I think it is - anyway, it's huge!) new library - full of almost more computers than books, 2 airplane hangars, etc.etc.etc., and hire someone (salary $50,000 a year!) who has never lived in the state, much less the town, to renovate Main St. back into the old West, only fancier?

One of our Northern county reps can't get the Southern county (where the poverty is) reps to get their tails up here to figure out who is going to run the fairly new local college. All they care about is keeping the Southern college running....80 miles away!

It's enuff to drive ya nuts!

Since Sean Penn's going to retire for a few years, we all *know* he'll be spending all his spare time here, so I figure, he's got plenty of money...

LOL

The half-n-half with Bass or Harp is my favorite, but I don't remember which one. I wasn't aware of the naming specificity.

Straub is very rich (barley with corn in the mash), with an unusual, light hoppiness. Critics call the flavor 'green' but normally it's very smooth if fresh enough. It has no preservatives (or added sugar), so it must be drank quickly and kept from the light to avoid skunkiness.

I lived in California for 48 years and know taxes were less. For one thing, CA offers either a Veteran's exemption, or Homeowners. Homeowners is best.

This county in Arizona has duplicated courts, colleges, libraries, and "my" town pays the majority in taxes.

Get this - we are TAXED about 9% for food - grocery store food! Want to celebrate a special occasion, serve tiny lobster tails - fork up $35!

And people ask me why I'm homesick....

BTW, with Straub, it is almost impossible to get a headache. Goodness knows I've tried. ;O)

Not to "beat up" on midwesterners,

I don't know first hand...but I have the feeling that's the way it is all the way 'round. People don't want to live in the big city, but don't really want the "inconvenience" of a small town. I DO feel badly for the locals.
