Four years of Carter was the price for eight years of Reagan. Four years of Carter was the cost of nominating Gerald Ford in 1976 instead of Reagan. Even Ford, with the Nixon Pardon on his resume, almost beat Carter;
almost certainly Reagan would have campaigned better than Ford and he was completely isolated from Watergate fallout.
