We also had to keep our thermostats turned down in office buildings, and other such feeble efforts which did nothing but make everyone miserable. Our office had air conditioning, but we were required to set the thermostat high to "save" energy. The fact that the design of our A/C was such that setting the thermostat higher WASTED energy rather than saving it didn't matter, of course . . .

Wasn't it also during the Carter administration that 1 1/2 gallon commonds came into being.......to save water. Never mind that it usually took 2 flushings.
