I lived in Winston salem from late 70s, all thru 80s & early 90s..

close to beach & close to mountains

I went to many acc games.. football & basketball. With no pro sports there at time (came as I left) the people were crazy sports=wise for all from little league ball to college...

I need to get back outside...

my buddy bill's thread kept me laughing & inside much too long.

"close to beach & close to mountains"

Indeed - that proximity made it ideal, just a few hours to either one. Since I grew up in Florida and lived there again several times, the beach did not draw me nearly as often as the mountains.
It was so wonderful to pack family and picnic fare and take groups of neighbors along to enjoy the glories of the high country and vistas!

We even in July 1974 went to Grandfather Mountain for The Highland Games, and my Scottish blood was singing for sure with the Grand March of The Clans in full regalia and bagpipies playing --
