Which might be caused by idiots merging onto a 70-mph highway at 40-50 mph. You would think people would use the lengthy on-ramp to match the speed of traffic, but noooo....
I have done that myself. Of course, I was driving a 1960 Chevy and its big and heavy. They backed off.
"Once, many years ago (I was young and brave), I simply hit my right turn signal and started pulling back into the right lane, even though we were side-by-side, since there was an oncoming semi."
I do that a lot. It always works.
"I've never understood why so many people insist on this extremely annoying behavior. It's just weird."
I read a letter to the editor in my local paper a few years ago. The writer was responding to a previous letter that asked your question. This second writer said he did it just to slow down those who insisted on driving too fast.
Hmm.. I didn't notice too many cameras last time I drove there (two years ago, mostly on the M4, M40, and the London circular M25).
...interesting thing about Germany's Autobahn, very smooth/deep and very expensive. They're built in shorter segments than in America. The cost of building our road like the Autobahn would be scary..I think the contractor(s) are liable for any imperfections (hence lawsuits, maybe?) in the design of the hwy.
BINGO!...thats' the way the Germans drive, it makes the most sense.
Well, can't you tell Speeding is only illegal if you get caught? /S
Amazing how flippant people are to the Motor Vehicle Code but will scream bloody murder over trivial things.
Our highways have turned into NASCAR clones. Folks bumper to bumber to bumper to bumper in the left lane at 80mph. Someone drops a cigarette in his lap and you got a 10 car pileup. If you need to do 80mph you didnt leave soon enough.
And we wonder why our insurance rates are so high.....
You reminded me - A good friend of mine refers to the Baltimore Beltway during rush hour as the Special Olympics of Auto Racing. I do not know how he survives it twice a day every working day. I always found it to have more stupidity per mile than any other driving I have done.
He was describing your attitude (and driving I imagine) as he talked about why the bill was introduced and passed by the legislature. Thank God I don't have to put up with such nonsense anymore.
Where did you get that?
A couple of years ago, in Nebraska, my son and I had car trouble and the HP gave us a ride to the nearest truck stop. He had THREE radars going.
I think someone gave you bad information.
You're right about that but keep in mind that we have many, many more miles of interstate highways than they have autobahns. We also have more vehicles using the highways per population than the Germans do.
I knew several Germans who were planning to visit the US and had no understanding of the size of our country. A popular destination was Florida. I remember one German friend of mind who was going to vacation in Florida and then drive to D.C. I mentioned to him that it was a least a two day drive from Florida, something he had no idea of and didn't plan for.
I drive a company vehicle with our company name and 1-800 number plastered all over it. I don't care if the "flow of traffic" is breaking the speed limit. I have my cruise control set at exactly the speed limit. I will not risk a ticket in a company vehicle, nor will I risk someone calling and reporting me as speeding. If the speeders catch up to me while I'm passing a line of semi's, well then they can be the ones to extend a little courtesy. It works both ways. Why should the people who are obeying the law always have to be the ones to accommodate? (I think we know the answer, but you get my point).
Who said I was just hanging out in the left lane? And I'm sorry, but the problem lies with the speeders, not those of us who are obeying the law.
Ha ha, that's what my wife who is a Michigan native told me.
You made the assumption that I was just hanging out in the left lane because it was my right. I never said any such thing. And I am very well aware of the laws of the road in Nebraska, thank you.
I have a better solution: stay out of Illinois. ;-)
You need to catch a clue. If I'm in the middle of passing someone (while I'm doing the legal posted speed limit) and you catch me because you're an idiot and driving 20 over, then, too bad for you. Your gonna slow down till I'm done with my pass. Polite roadway behavior is for everyone, get it?? By the way, do you kiss your mother with that mouth??
I always do. I don't always read every post to me before responding, though. :-)
