Robinson abandoned his family to live with his gay lover. Had his lover been a woman, church leaders would've been up in arms about such behavior and there is no way he would've been made a Bishop. The problem is, is that Griswold, the so-called Presiding Bishop, came into office with an agenda for promoting the gay lifestyle and Robinson was a convenient instrument of that agenda.
The blame for this lies not only with Griswold, who appointed a gay Bishop, but those Bishops who elected Griswold. His agenda was well known prior to his becoming Presiding Bishop.

My Parish sacked the Rector for exactly that - leaving his wife for another woman. A few years later, his Holy Orders were revoked by the ECUSA. He is no longer a Priest, but Robinson becomes a Bishop. Go figure...
