Most Americans want the next pope to work for changes in Roman Catholic Church policies to allow priests to marry and women to join the priesthood.
The Church is declining in the U.S. (along with the rest of the west); we shouldn't be paying half so much attention to the west as to Africa and Latin America.

Africa by far is the most hardline conservative part of the Church. The liberals can sit quietly in the corner, I dare say.
