An ex-convict suspected of being the "SpongeBob Squarepants" bank robber was arrested Friday on suspicion of a string of armed holdups in the Twin Cities metro area.
FBI agents had been investigating whether the same 45-year-old South St. Paul man may have committed as many as eight armed robberies of TCF Bank branches.
For some of the robberies, the FBI has said, the man used a bag depicting SpongeBob, a popular cartoon character who is always getting into trouble.
But there was nothing funny about the alleged crimes of this man, who was sentenced in 1988 by a Ramsey County judge to 81 months in prison for aggravated robbery in the metro area. And in February, he was filmed by a surveillance camera during a Hastings robbery as he pointed a long-barreled revolver at a clerk while demanding money.
FBI agents suspect the same man also robbed the TCF Bank in the Sun Ray Shopping Center, just off Interstate Hwy. 94 in St. Paul, three different times. During the March 2 robbery of that TCF branch, he was suspected of wearing a fake nose.
The robber also had been described as having a Fu Manchu-style mustache and glasses during the robberies at TCF branches within Cub Foods stores.
Under investigation are holdups that began in November, if not earlier, and continued until recently. They stretched from Northfield to Woodbury to Blaine.
The man is in the custody of U.S. marshals.
