A man wielding a Samurai sword killed a woman and injured three other people in a "bloodbath" in a German church on Sunday, police in the south-western city of Stuttgart said.
"The 25-year-old perpetrator wrought a bloodbath in the church," Michael Kuehner said, deputy chief of police in Stuttgart.
"He thrust about himself with a Samurai sword and struck out at random at the people in his way."
Police told a news conference a 43-year-old woman died in the attack.
They had originally identified the deceased as a man.
A man and a woman were also seriously injured and another man lost his hand.
Police arrested a Tamil from the Stuttgart region, who had previously behaved aggressively in the church.
He also had a pistol on him.
He was still carrying the sword in his hand when police apprehended him with pepper spray just after the attack.
Police cited personal problems as the probable reason behind the attack.
They ruled out any political motive.
Around 65 people were attending the afternoon service at the Protestant church when the man lashed out.
A witness said the area in front of the church was covered in blood.

Crap like this is why a lot of us in my church pack. Several local police are there also, but only because they want to be. It's not a dangerous place, but you never know anymore.
Several years ago at my old church in Tulsa, some whacko walked up to the pastor during the middle of the sermon and showed him his pistol, then said something to the effect of "God told me to preach today". The pastor eventually talked the gun out of his hand and the guy was mobbed and held until TPD arrived. I didn't see it as I was overseas deployed, but my mom and aunt were in the first few rows and were terrified.
This is horrible. Nobody will ever see the inside of that church in the same way again.
Those poor people. What a terrible thing to happen!
Did they give any sort of motivation as to this whole thing? Of course I know there is no justifiable motivation, but what got this guy so fired up?

In the midst of the article mentioning the German gendarmes' bowing and scraping before the altars of various PC dieties, I noticed the description of the attacker as a "Tamil from Stuttgart." As I recall, many Tamils of India and Sri Lanka are practicioners of that most peaceful of all religions. Some may be Hindus as well, though.
Perhaps some Freeper with more extensive knowledge can enlighten us about the Tamils?

Thanks! According to this, however, it seems that the Tamils are an ethnic label rather than religious. Seems that there are Tamils that are Hindu (most) but also Muslim and Christian. That must be why there are so many Islamic sites in the Tamil language. All those Hindus must love to read the Koran.
