2004 (Most Recent Figures Available) Crude Oil Imports From Persian Gulf Highlights: Released on February 23, 2005 It should be noted that several factors influence the source of a company's crude oil imports. For example, a company like Motiva, which is partly owned by Saudi Refining Inc., would be expected to import a large percentage from the Persian Gulf, while Citgo Petroleum Corporation, which is owned by the Venezuelan state oil company, would not be expected to import a large percentage from the Persian Gulf, since most of their imports likely come from Venezuela. In addition, other factors that influence a specific company's sources of crude oil imports would include the characteristics of various crude oils as well as a company's economic needs. While, in general, crude oil is fungible, i.e., one crude oil can be substituted for another, many refineries are optimized by refining crude oil with specific qualities (e.g., the API gravity, the amount of sulfur in the crude oil, etc.). Also, depending on the global crude oil market condition at the time, the price difference between heavy and light crude oils varies, thus changing the economic dynamics for different refineries. Therefore, many factors determine the source of a company's crude oil imports.

Ok. Now that is a little trivia. Is that supposed to influence where I get my gas and home heating oil? If it is, it ain't gonna do the trick.
This is completely bogus as to determining who really uses imported Persian Gulf Oil. The refineries where the crude is distilled into things like gasoline, kerosene, home heating oil and vaseline don't really care where the oil comes from. It all gets mixed together based on grade of crude ranging from light sweet Texas crude to sour thick Brent North Sea Crude. So the gasoline that goes into your tank has come from many sources. So stop thinking that you can boycott a particular company and not get that Saudi crude that your car thirsts for. In addition, the gas stations are know to get gasoline from independent truckers who go fill up at the cheapest refinery. So Shell may actually be Exxon and vice versa. That's why the thought that one gas is better than another is a fiction.
Right. They all swap gasoline with one another so that they can supply their stations from terminals that are more convenient and therefore lower their distribution costs. In other words, if you buy gasoline from an Exxon-Mobil station, it might have been refined by Shell. The only part of the gasoline that you can positively count on being Exxon-Mobil is their additive package.
Other than being a complete crock, nice post.
