Profiles of the four candidates to replace WTO Director-General Supachai Panitchpakdi of Thailand when he ends his term Aug. 31. Jaya Krishna Cuttaree of Mauritius

Currently: minister of foreign affairs, international trade and regional cooperation; took part in WTO talks, notably the Doha summit in 2001 and Cancun meeting in 2003, where he acted as spokesman for the African Union.

Other career highlights: Lawmaker since 1982; previously was minister of labor, attorney-general and minister of industry; served as official of Organization for African Unity, U.N. Scientific and Cultural Organization and was general manager in a Mauritius sugar planters' corporation.

Age: 63

Carlos Perez del Castillo of Uruguay

Currently: Special adviser on international trade negotiations to Uruguay's president.

Other career highlights: Uruguayan ambassador to the WTO, 1998-2004; chaired most of the organization's top bodies at various times, including the ruling General Council, the Dispute Settlement Body and the so-called TRIPS council, which settled an accord allowing countries hit by HIV/AIDS to override drugs patents to help get cheap medicines; served in Uruguayan Foreign Ministry and was senior negotiator for South America's Mercosur trade deal; ran economic consulting group in Montevideo.

Age: 61

Pascal Lamy of France

Currently: president of the Paris-based "Notre Europe" think tank; associate professor, Institut d'Etudes Politiques, Paris.

Other career highlights: European Union trade commissioner, 1999-2004; involved in key WTO talks and other high-level commercial negotiations; senior official of Credit Lyonnais financial group, 1994-99; top aide to EU chief Jacques Delors, 1985-1994; adviser to French prime minister and official in the country's Finance Ministry.

Age: 57

Luiz Felipe de Seixas Correa of Brazil

Currently: Brazilian ambassador to the WTO since 2002, he helped broker last summer's framework deal that gave a boost to trade treaty talks.

Other career highlights: Also serves as ambassador to U.N. European offices in Geneva, and won wide respect for steering tough 192-nation talks that completed the World Health Organization's landmark tobacco control treaty last year; was a presidential foreign policy aide in Brazil; also was ambassador in Germany, France, Argentina and Spain, at the United Nations in New York, and in Washington, D.C.

Age: 59.

Helped to destroy property-rights in the international arena by forcing pharmaceutical companines to allow "poor countries" to make their own versions of drugs violating patents, or by forcing them to sell the drugs as lower costs to the "poor countries" forcing Americans to subsidize their generousity by paying more to make up the difference.

mmmm I think you would like Lamy. He has vowed to defend EU agrico subsidies to death.therefore killing the Doha round of the WTO.

Ive read that Pascal Lamy is the front runner since the Euros have asked for quid pro quo for its support of Wolfowitz for the World Bank.

France should like Wolfowitz just fine...

"If I am confirmed I will be an international civil servant. I will be president of a multilateral organization with 184 member nations," Wolfowitz said in the interview in Indonesia's leading English-language daily.
