Terri Schiavo's widower has gone into hiding because of the furore over his wife's death and has sought police protection.
Michael Schiavo, 41, is under guard three days after his disabled wife died from dehydration at a Florida hospice.
She had spent 13 days without food or water after a United States judge upheld Mr Schiavo's claim that she would not have wished to continue life in a persistently vegetative state.
"His goal is to find safe housing because of these death threats," said a friend, Alan Shoopak. "It's not over. Unfortunately, it's just beginning."
Mrs Schiavo's parents, Bob and Mary Schindler, who went to the US Supreme Court to block the removal of their daughter's feeding tube, admit that they care little for their son-in-law, but have urged against revenge attacks.
"Our family abhors any violence, or any threats of violence. We ask that all those who support our family be completely kind in their words and deeds towards others," said Mrs Schiavo's sister, Suzanne Vitadamo.
Anger at Mr Schiavo's actions has been fuelled by the revelation that a court order from a county judge, George Greer, who repeatedly refused the Schindlers' pleas to let their daughter live, will allow him to have her cremated and her ashes interred in Pennsylvania. The Schindlers' request for a share of the ashes or even a lock of their daughter's hair has also been refused.
The family see it as the final act in a 12-year campaign of spite by their son-in-law. Other alleged snubs include having his wife's wedding ring melted down to make a ring for himself.
Last week, while his wife's life ebbed away at the Woodside Hospice in Pinellas Park, Florida, Mr Schiavo moved into quarters on site, to avoid protesters outside. Some had banners expressing vitriol for Mr Schiavo and Judge Greer. "You are going to hell, murderers," one read. The hospice also received hoax bomb threats last week.
For several days, Mr Schiavo has not returned to the home in Clearwater he shares with his fiancée, Jodi Centonze, and their two children. Friends speculate that they may leave Florida altogether.
The results of a post-mortem examination, which it is believed may shed more light on years-old bone fractures Mrs Schiavo suffered, and the extent of her brain damage, will be published within weeks.
Mr Schiavo's friends and family speak of a man who honoured his wife's wishes and released her from what he perceived to be a life without hope. After cradling her in his arms as she died on Thursday morning, he placed a rose in her hand and kissed her goodbye.
A Mass to celebrate her life will be held on Tuesday.
Jodi should tape all their conversations, write a revealing letter, and leave it with a lawyer. Then she should let Michael know. Otherwise, he may run out of money and have to cash in on her and the kids, too.
I heard the same report, that Michael was going to 'allow' the Schindlers to hold a Catholic funeral mass. More of Michael's generosity? Not likely. More control and spin from the Felos/Michael camp. Anyway, the Schindlers could certainly have a Catholic memorial mass for their daughter without his permission.
Let's see...Michael needs safe housing. The French Riviera maybe or Hawaii? He won't need a job, just lots of $$$, and that's about to come his way.
We can hope that the Schindlers sue Michael, that hospice, and Florida for civil damages. Jodi should be very worried, not just for herself, but for her children. He is a monster.
And he could have avoided it all just by doing the decent thing and giving the Schindlers their daughter to care for. The whole thing is just so ironic and sad.
Welcome to the rest of your life, murderer.
I have to humbly disagree, Bob, because Paul was a murderer (the Bible says he breathed murder with every breath he took) and his particular crime was going from house to house and murdering Christians...with the sanction of the government. Look what the Lord did for him! Every one of us in the flesh is evil in God's sight...it's when he touches that spirit of ours once we acknowledge him as Lord and repent of our sins that makes us a new creature. Remember what Jesus said? Behold, I make all things new. So if Michael came to the Lord, acknowldging his sacrifice on the cross in his behalf, and if he repented, truly, of what he has done, he'd be a brand new person. Or as Jesus himself put it...he'd be born again, this time of the spirit.
Me, too. I know we should pray for Michael's salvation. I really do hope he turns to the Lord to ease the burden of his guilt. But if he doesn't, then I fear he will be tormented the rest of his life.
Then why is Kavorkian sitting in prison?
And I'd say they don't come cheap. He is a fairly young man and is bound to run out of money someday. And at what point will he feel safe enough to dismiss the bodygaurds?
That totally sums it up. He is his own worst enemy.
I do, too. There was a news story about the case one day and they showed Michael getting in a car with her and she seemed to find the media attention very amusing. She was grinning from ear to ear.
BUMP
I hope she was not concious as she died. Not only starved and dehydated, but held in that hateful man's arms at the last moment....what an awful death!. I hope she is already in God's company.
And got arrested for a case of road rage. Of course he was found innocent but it happened.
And probably knee deep in that Scientology group that killed Lisa McPherson and Terri and who knows how many more.
Hmmmmm....... very very strange. I wonder why the sudden about face. Curious.
If he leaves Florida he most likely will not have the police protection that he had so abused with his wife down there.
He wouldn't have Greer and all his little rotten corrupt people to help him.
I think he would be far worse off it he does leave Florida.
MCD
Of course they can't have a lock of hair. A lock of
hair would carry medical infomation for up to a year,
maybe, insulin.
It is a sad day in America, when the MSM lauds the
devil incarnate and bestows material riches on him.
He should have thought about that before he pulled the tube.
