After that post, the following picture came up in the "FReepathon window"
I thought, "how appropriate".
Now if we could just convince the mule that the one on the right is a big cat, rather than a female dog.

That was 50 years ago? Shoot. My dog was 12 and we had to put her down the fall of 03 and I'm still grieving.

I went back and looked at the photos. What Snopes describes as a chain on the cougar's leg looks more like a rein that wraps under the courar and is flying up next to the cougar's leg, in sync with the motion of the cougar. The reins are dangling in all of the other photos as well. I think this is authentic.
To: passionfruit
I enlarged the photos, and at first I thought there was a trap on a front leg, but after looking closely, it is the reins.
I have a mule and have ridden him for 12 years. We have gotten in fights with dogs when I was mounted, and he always keeps me aboard. I had another mule, though, that would dump the rider first thing if there was "work" to be done.
The mule in these pics is not playing. Look at the dust kicked up by his back feet. This indicates he has his weight on his haunches so he can strike with his front hooves if needed. Plus he is "flashing his eyes" in one photo. This is something I have only seen mules do. They do it when they are really pissed.
I would be more convinced had the rifle still been in the scabbard, but I see this as genuine.

I agree with you. By the way, what makes Snopes any authority of any authenticity of anything? I don't get it. Who died and made them boss?

Sorry, the 50 years ago was basically a time, when I was a kid, I put the dog down about 35-36 years ago, and I as well as my brothers and sisters still discuss him, miss him, hasn't been a dog in any of our lives quite like him since.
(Picked him up in a pound, unwanted and abused, turned out to be a very loyal, intelligent and fearless loyal friend)
He was a German Shepard, but light colored, about 100lbs in his prime, didn't have any hip problems or even walk funny like the German Shepard show dogs do now and really didn't even look like what they sell as German Shepards today.

Mules are not quite the same as the jack ass but both are extremely inteligent animals - waaaaaay smarter than horses.
Mules and donkeys are commonly used very successfully as guardian livestock animals and will KILL an intruder no matter what it is. Mules have an intuition uncomparable to anything else.
Mules are also sturdier and maintain health better than horses and don't cause saddle soreness much like horses.

I don't understand how an herbivore learns to kill like that It's a God given instinct.

Herd Stallions (wild horses) will go out of their way to hurt anything that they deem to be dangerous, (yea they are still herbivores), testosterone in mammals seems to bring out desirable survival skills in Herbivores, Omnivores, and Carnivores.

What is the meaning of the phrase "i'll be your huckleberry"? I've heard it in that movie but i'm not sure what it means.

No Debate
Donkeys are a whole different life form, I have known them to be docile to the point that they might as well be stuffed animals and others at the other end of the spectrum, like they were trying out for the lead role of "Grumpy Old Men III" where the least little thing would get them to stomping, laying their ears back and shaking their head.

If you all don't mind my asking(and you probably will), how come trolls are associated with cats? Is it from the movie "cat's eye", that this idea originated, for the "troll zappers" being cats, because that is the only correlation I can think of(where the cat killed the troll trying to steal Drew Barrymore's breath).

LOL. Looks like you've been acquainted with the jug-heads.
Creating a bond with a donkey is creating a blessing fer your soul. Because they ARE a whole different life form.

Perhaps a woman may be able to tell you but I cannot probably because I don't watch TV or play childrens games.

Trolls are associated with cats BECAUSE of the
Viking Kitties!!!!
ZZZOT.
Sorry. This female has no answer.

Your dogs would go in with a fighting, kicking, biting mule just to get at a lowly mountain lion? I'm impressed. ;)
Dogs know enough to stay away from a kicking mule or horse.
