Feeling like a very moronic Catholic right now but, what is the tradition behind the Papal name change???
I'm not Catholic but I would guess it has to do with the large change in status in so many ways when one is elevated to the papacy. Perhaps someone who is better versed in Roman Catholicism can answer your question more definitively.
