You might be interested in "Thunder Run: The Armored Strike to Capture Baghdad" by Mark Bowden and David Zucchino. Great book that provides details of an amazing combat operation that will be studied for years.

Super, thanks. FMC's post inspired me to to to the US Army's Center of Military History web site:

where I read a short "combat chronicle" of the 3ID. They were the ONLY US division in WWII to fight the Nazis on ALL fronts: North Africa, Sicily, Italy, and France.
SFC Smith served with an infantry division (The "Rock of the Marne" Division) with an incredibly glorious tradition.
