Brain-damaged Terri Schiavo dies

Terri Schiavo, the brain-damaged Florida woman at the heart of a bitter legal dispute, has died, a spokesman for her parents has said. Mrs Schiavo's feeding tube was disconnected on 18 March, following a seven-year battle through the courts.

Her husband Michael Schiavo had said his wife would not have wanted to live in her current condition.

The 41-year-old's parents fought to the highest level of the US courts system to keep their daughter alive.

Timeline: Terri Schiavo case

Mrs Schiavo died at the Pinellas Park hospice where she lay for years while her husband and her parents fought over whether to keep her alive or not.

Her parents and their two other children were with her up to 15 minutes before she died.

A few minutes before she died, they were told to leave the room by Michael Schiavo, their spokesman said.

They were allowed back into the room after she died.

Father Frank Pavone, national director of the organisation Priests for Life, accused Mr Schiavo of "heartless cruelty".

"This is not only a death, this is a killing," he said. "We grieve that our nation has allowed such an atrocity as this."

Mrs Schiavo collapsed after her heart stopped beating temporarily in 1990.

Court-appointed doctors had said she was in a permanent vegetative state and would not recover, but her parents had said she could.

The case galvanised activists from both sides of the euthanasia debate.

I have to say this, because I think MS is the lowest creature ever and the ultimate control freak.

My bet is that he stood at the foot of the bed and gloated over winning.

Those last minutes were his victory.

But hey, I'm a mean ole' cynical geezerette who don't see much good in his kind.

I just think it's dehumanizing to constantly attach "brain damaged" to the front of her name, as if that is what defines her as a person. She's a woman with brain damage, emphasis on woman, not brain damage.

I doubt it. Half this country doesn't remember 9/11, where 3000 people died.

Most of the country will be over this by Monday.

What? You're surprised the BBC and the liberal media in America share a common viewpoint?? :P

I hope and pray Terri is safe from all these bastards now.

Yes, but many remember WTC911 and many more will remember this and see things in a different light from now on.

"His WIFE'S passing?" There would not have been a "wife" if there had not been parents. Just tell me where in the Ten Commandments it says, "Thou Shall Honor your Son-in-Law?" He has never shown the Shindler family any respect and I suspect that was even before her original collapse. He should have been home with his common law wife and illegitimate children instead of sitting by the death bed of a woman who he has not known for 15 years. Instead he wanted to again, be the focal point of an issue that he should have walked away from many years ago, especially after engaging in a relationship with another woman. A person who lives a self-absorbed life many times causes others to speculate about intentions and motives, causing Michael to be responsible for any accusations cast his way.

That's why I said "pray."

"Just tell me where in the Ten Commandments it says, "Thou hall Honor your Son-in-Law?""

I believe it says "love your neigbor as yourself". That pretty much covers it. Leave the judgement to God.

"Leave judgement to God."

"When I consider that God is just, I tremble for my country."

I thought about that also but then I realized, he loves himself! Think about that for revenge purposes. ;-)
