SCHUNDLER, DiGAETANO AND MURPHY CALL ON FORRESTER TO MAKE PUBLIC GOP CONTRIBUTIONS AND PLEDGES GOP gubernatorial candidates Bret Schundler, Paul DiGaetano and John Murphy today called on Doug Forrester to make public by Friday, April 1 all contributions he has given or promised to New Jersey Republican committees, candidate committees or individuals since January 1, 2005.
We call on Doug Forrester to publish all contributions he has personally made or promised to Republican county or municipal political committees or individuals or individual GOP candidate committees. We ask Mr. Forrester to detail all contributions and promises of financial support from him, his political action committees, his wife, his family, his companies, or employees, the three GOP candidates said.
On Friday, March 18, The Press of Atlantic City reported that two Gloucester Township delegates to the Camden County GOP convention said they were forced to vote for Forrester because Forrester had promised the township $10,000. According to The Press, the money would come if all of the township votes went to Forrester.
Similar cash for votes incidents are rumored to have occurred at the Gloucester County, Union County, and most recently, Ocean County Republican conventions. Bergen Countys convention may have been another target of Forrester funds, but it wasnt enough for him to win there.
We believe Doug Forrester, not a spokesman, should give voters a detailed explanation regarding these serious allegations. It is unacceptable that convention votes may have been for sale to the highest bidder. Schundler, DiGaetano and Murphy said.
Elections should be about ideas and contrasts. It cannot be about money as is the case with Jon Corzine, the three candidates continued.
The Republican Party needs to put forth the candidate who provides the strongest contrast against Jon Corzine who himself purchased his uncontested nomination. Doug Forrester recognizes the need for contrast: The last time he competed for a Republican nomination for statewide office in 2002, when Forrester competed for the GOP nomination for U.S. Senate he urged county chairmen and municipal party leaders to take into account the fact that then-front running Republican Jim Treffinger couldnt offer that necessary contrast in the fall campaign against Bob Torricelli. Forrester said Treffinger had admitted to violations of campaign finance laws.
Republicans, including NJGOP Chairman Tom Wilson, have said that Jon Corzines $7 million in personal contributions to Democrat candidates and committees will be a major issue in the general election. Therefore, Republicans have a right to know if Doug is engaged in this same type of activity, the three GOP candidates said.
Personally....im for Murphy or Shundler
