Senator Alan Simpson had it about right years ago when he called the group, "33 million Americans bound together by a common love of airline discounts."

The AARP is the victim of its own leftist policies. This boomer has (and will) steadfastly refused to join the AARP because of their leftist, anti-American positions.

They sent me a card one week after my fiftieth birthday, LOL. They couldn't pay me enough to join.
But actually, I think the reason their "meetings" are disappearing is generational.
My mom is 76 and still goes to high school reunions, and her high school classmates meet every couple of months for picnics, etc.
Neither my husband nor I, in the fiftyish crowd, have any desire to get together with folks from our high school or college and relive the "good 'ole days."
In fact, in our city, they've had to combine reunions of different high schools (same graduation date) in order to get enough participation to throw reunions (and our high school graduating classes weren't small, most over 500 kids in each graduating class.)
So, all that to say, I don't see the boomers as people that will flock to AARP meetings, or lodge meetings, or bridge clubs.
Why that is, I don't know, it just seems to be the way it is.

The decline in the AARP chapters follows the trend of other groups -- everything from the Elks, Moose and Veterans of Foreign Wars to garden clubs, sewing guilds and ladies auxiliaries. I feel bad that the Elks, Moose and VFWs, garden clubs, sewing guilds and ladies auxiliaries are losing members.
The AARP, on the other hand, can go to hell. They are socialist propagandists and their latest TV ad is a disgrace to anyone with even the slightest hint of honesty.

Good for you! The AARP is the an evil, socialist group, and I'm glad that their membership rolls are declining.

The bad news is that overall membership continues to grow...even though the number of chapters dwindles.

Senator Alan Simpson had it about right years ago when he called the group, "33 million Americans bound together by a common love of airline discounts."I think most of their members are there for the discounts. Once my parents and mother-in-law were informed of their politics they dropped them like a hot potato.

I feel the same way as you do about those other organizations and many others like them. There's been a general decline in community organizations where people are drawn together by some type of common interest or experience, just for the enjoyment of being together. I think that's a net loss for our society.

Now, all the conservatives have to do is come up with an organization that provides discounts on everything from insurance to airline tickets and we can be rid of this liberal horror.
To: spodefly
I just inferred that from the excerpted part about membership "ballooning."

They sent me a card one week after my fiftieth birthday, LOL. They couldn't pay me enough to join. On average, I get sent one membership invitation quarterly. I do the same thing every time: tear up the card and anything that's got my name on it, stuff the prepaid envelope with whatever's left, and send it back. That way they can pay for the postage.

The newest members don't have time to meet, because they're too busy travelling the world on the wealth the government plunders from their grandchildren.

I think there's an organization called USA Next that's trying to do just that.
