I was always under the impression that Christians can pray directly to God. Am I wrong? And in the Islamic world, if things are so direct between the believer and God, why are there all those Imams and Mullahs and religious tribunals set up to punish and terrorize anyone who doesn't toe the doctrinal line?

I imagine anyone can pray directly to God. I didn't write the article, you'll have to direct your questions to someone who can answer them.
