March 29, 2005 The defense team is trying to avoid calling Mayor Street to the stand. Instead, they want to play two dozen wiretaps of Street talking to his friend lawyer Ron White. Action News obtained copies of those tapes. The defense wants to show that White didn't need City Treasurer Corey Kemp to get what he wanted.
The conversations between White and Street reveal a tight relationship. White was spearheading Street's campaign fundraising at the time.
The government contends that White showered Kemp with gifts to steer lucrative city bond work to firms White favored. But, Kemp's defense contends White could get Mayor Street on the phone anytime, and didn't need Kemp's help.
Street and White can be heard on a broad range of topics, including personnel moves.
Sometimes it gets personal. In one call White is heard complaining about his son getting arrested.
Mostly it was politics. White and Street are heard the day after the primary election in May of 2003. That euphoria quickly evaporated in the months leading up to the general election. Street is heard pressing White to raise more campaign cash.
They discuss the mayor's box at the Linc which is smaller than the box at the Vet. Mayor Street continues to deny that the mayor's box was used for political fundraisers.

Thanks for the ping Mo. I heard it on the news yesterday. I knew way back when the "it's because I'm a black man" was totally calculated. This just confirmed it. And to think Katz had a good chance of winning up to that point.
