Study deeper into the War Between the States, a.k.a. Civil War before making such an uninformed statement. In fact, that war had nothing to do with the protection of people's rights. It was about states' rights to seceed from the Union. In your reasoning, exactly how would the lives of people who wanted to be free from what they saw as opression be harmed by forming their own government? Actually, the northern economy was at risk of losing the lucrative natural resources and agricultural production of the South. It was a war of economics by force. Slavery, though an issue, was a minor one and not the primary reason.
You could not be more wrong. While you are superficially correct, in the sense that the actual cause of hostilities was South Carolina's seizure and attempted seizure of Federal property, the catalyst was the threat of the abolition of slavery. That is what caused South Carolina to leave. It's clearly stated, by South Carolina herself, in "Declaration of the Immediate Causes Which Induce And Justify The Secession of South Carolina From the Federal Union", adopted December 24, 1860.
"It was a war of economics by force. Slavery, though an issue, was a minor one and not the primary reason."
You are correct. The North did not really care about the slaves..That was the cover-up for their real goal which was economic. I think it is safe to say that in all cases of oppression of some people by others, a cover of the real goal is always put forth in the form of some kind of explanation of good intentions which will appeal to most people not able to get the facts.
